I wouldn't be too quick to call the SUV dead. They're clearly what a lot of people prefer given reasonable fuel costs. Gasoline has shot through the roof in the last couple of years, cheap and easy credit has dried up and the economy has come to a stand still. This has kept people from buying cars and trucks, any cars or trucks and those that still can are choosing much smaller vehicles for now.

However we've been through this cycle before and historically whenever it becomes financially possible for average Americans to buy bigger vehicles they do. I believe that fuel prices will come down a bit and that alternate ways of powering our vehicles will come to be. Even in the near term diesels can greatly increase the mileage of big SUVs. When this happens, and we get used to $5 a gallon and the panic wears off, many people will continue to buy SUVs. The SUV is far from dead, just humbled. It no longer reigns supreme.
