Hey gang,

My 2014 ELr came with only one key fob. I read about the programming instructions in the manual. I'm curious because I am unsure how the actual key part works. When you buy a spare key fob is the metal key part the same for all the ELR's or does it have to be cut. I see where it can be ordered and programmed using the center console. Also anyone know where the best place to get it from? I see they run about $120's is that about right?

Yes, the metal key has to be cut to match your original. They are pretty much the same for all of GM (the metal key part), so, a general lock smith should be able to handle cutting it. Be sure to get the correct part number. It doesn't fit a lot of models.

I had the dealer do mine. They were pretty fair.

You might want to call and compare the price at your local dealership. If they'll program it and cut the new blank for you, too, that might be just as cost effective.

I've always had my dealership change the battery in mine, too. I'm always afraid I'm going to snap the things when I open them. My theory is if they break it, they can replace it for me.

(As an aside, it's weird how many cars seem to be missing their second key. Wonder if people just forget to bring them when they trade in the car or if they sell them on ebay to make some money.)

Enjoy your ELR!

My last MB AMG, BMW M-Sport, and both Jaguar F-Types all came with only one fob. I think people keep them for souvenirs. The MB and BMW dealers both charged me $250 for a second fob. The Jaguar dealer replaced them for free. Good thing, since a replacement for a Jag fob was $500.

BTW, I tried those replacement fobs listed on the internet from three different companies. They were guaranteed to work, but not one of them would program.
