It's not cheap ($1,200 without installation) but this site now offers to upgrade the user interface on older Cadillacs. It's not just software, adding the faster processor that allows the new CUE system to work. Apparently it makes the CUE operation snappier.

ELR owners must go with the more expensive IO6 system because the standard factory navi system requires it. There's a guy on another ELR forum that's going to have it done in the next couple weeks. I'll post his results (and mine if I follow through with it).

Not sure how anybody is going to make any money on this. So few ELRs to begin with, and even fewer willing to pay that much for CarPlay and android Auto. It's hard to imagine more than a dozen or so takers. Maybe I'm wrong.

Would be interested to see the results. Couple of questions

1) Who is doing the install?
2) I assume this voids the factory warranty? Does MVI continue to support the CUE system with critical patches/updates?
3) I assume this is tied to the VIN?
4) What happens when you go to the dealer for service. Could they mess CUE when they try to sync updates with the wrong head unit?
5) I have heard for other sites (maybe not with this company) that there is loss of the movable grid lines on the back camera. Any other issues you have heard of? I also think you may lose the ability to have the add on CD player install.

Again thanks for posting and would love to hear the results. Feel free to PM if you would rather talk offline. Good luck

For #2, the MVI website states you get 15 minutes of free technical support - wow, that seems awfully harsh.

Hi ace, I'm only in the initial research of this so this is all I know...

You would choose who does the install. A good car stereo outfit would seem best, or a Cadillac dealer.

Not sure it would void the warrantee but it shouldn't. GM software is being loaded.

I belive a VIN is required for purchase so the software can be tailored to the car (it's for older Cadillacs, not just ELR)

I have to believe you would tell the service center that it accepts the modern CUE system when getting software upgrade but don't know.

I have heard that it disables the time shift feature for the radio but I'm not sure about that.

As I said, there's a guy on a different forum that is going to have it done. I will ask him about the pros and cons and get back to you (or direct him here).

Update-

Julien has the system installed and he says CUE is much snappier and the screen has new icons.

Two issues have cropped up- no more radio time shift or HD radio. He will report back on whether or not these are gone for good after talking to MVI. I have directed him to this forum so he may check in to talk to you all.

Thanks for the update. I hope that the HD Radio function comes back. Missing time shift would not be a deal breaker. Any other issues? Do the grid lines still move with the steering wheel on the backup camera?

Remember, the Volt and ELR infotainment systems have much more stuff in them for all the EV part of the car. From what I can tell, this doesn't specifically say it supports Volts or ELRs. It's probably for regular ICE vehicles that don't have any of these special functions, just the regular AM/FM/XM with or without Nav. If any ELR or Volt owner has done this upgrade, please post pics and impressions.

My Cadillac dealer does custom work. Maybe they can do something similar since it's OEM equipment.

I had the MVI programmed CUE/HMI installed yesterday. If having done the CUE is not located where it is on other Cadillacs and where logic would dictate. It is located under the trunk near the 12V battery. Knowing this would have saved me about 1.5 hours install costs.

Not sure what happened to my original post from yesterday. Looks like the mods lost it.

The backup camera, guidance lines and warning symbols all work as before (was worried about this after reading it was a problem). Below is an explanation of HD radio (sucks but I don't listen to the radio and not willing to invest in trying to get it back).

Called MVI yesterday and got the following info about it. Even though HD was available on the 16 ELR was told GM has been removing HD from the new CUEs (maybe to save 10¢). I checked a couple of cars and didn't see HD listed as a spec. MVI just uses GM CUEs and reprograms them (not a CUE out of a 16 ELR). They don't know which may have HD but said all newer ones don't anymore. This is probably a case when you are better off getting an older module.

[speculation]There may be a workaround but didn't get to confirm. You may be able to pull your CUE and send in to be reprogramed with the new HMI 2.5 module. I'm just speculating but this might work.[/speculation]

Also if installing there is specific info related to the ELR. The HMI is located behind the touchscreen (usually located behind the glovebox). The CUE is usually located behind the touchscreen (and where logic dictates) but in the ELR the CUE is located below the trunk near the 12V battery. Yes the radio is actually in the trunk. Because of this unknown I had an extra 1.5 hours of install time and my car looked like a collection of parts on the shop floor and almost nothing resembling a dash in it. However the young tech really know his stuff and had no reservations about taking apart/putting together. Also luckily the shop manager had a contact at the local Cadillac dealership and was able to find out the CUE location. The manager even said his contact couldn't believe the CUE was below the trunk.

Will say the HMI make the system MUCH faster and more responsive.
