When using the mylink app to check the status of your car or send keyfob commands, it obviously uses data. Two questions about that:

1. Is that using data from the onstar data plan?
2. If not, will you get free status updates (tire pressure, battery level, gas level, etc) for as long as you own the car?

if using mylink on your phone to retrieve data from the car you are using whatever datasource your phone is using at the time. be that 3G/4G from your cellphone plan or your home/office wifi. You could potentially be using OnStar data if you are hooked up to in-car wifi but not sure why you would be checking this inside the car.

The app works for as long as you have the basic plan ... think most of us have that for 5 years with purchase but there are threads here that detail different people's experiences with OnStar after their free period is up.

The car uses the built-in wifi/cellular service to transmit data to/from Onstar. When you initiate a keyfob request via the app, it tells Onstar which then instructs the car to carry out the command.

As long as you have the basic Onstar service (included for 5 years as noted above), this will work. It does not use data from any data plan you have on the car for tethering.

Hmm. Where can I confirm how long I have included service for? I see that my onstar data trial expires in 2/2017 and my onstar plan (guidance) is good until 5/2017. I leased this car, not sure if that has anything to do with it.

You pay for data from the app to onstar.
Onstar pays for data from their server to the car - included in your service plan (and not part of your wifi bucket).

So using the app on the go will be data you're paying for in some form, be it from your in-vehicle wifi bucket, or your cell phone data plan.
Using it at home or places with wifi, free.

Most people got 5 years free basic plan (gives app features only) in addition to a full-service trial (but they overlap - e.g. 3 years full service + 2 more basic service if 5 total)
