I'm driving along with the climate system in Fan Only and the fan speed set at '1'. The outside temperature is about 92F. All windows are fully open.

Three times now I've seen the lower row of the center console display switch to the climate mini-view (or whatever that is called ) with the fan speed icon highlighted and flashing. It's as if the car wants to remind me that it thinks I could be more comfortable or something. It also feels as if, possibly, the air conditioning is on a bit as the air coming from the dashboard vents is cooler than the ambient air. Maybe there is some extra cool from the battery cooling bits that the car is sending to the cabin?

Is this a typical behavior for a 2013 Volt?

Yes it is. When the HV battery needs cooling, the AC switches on. You can feel colder air coming from the vents and you get the notification on the center screen.

You're referring to the black "bar" that comes on at the bottom showing a different setting, yes?

If so, yeah you're seeing a bug with the display, related to the high voltage battery cooling and when it comes on (presumably).

I see it often when I have my 2013 Volt set to Fan Only with the Fan turned off completely.

I never encountered this on my 2013. Of course, I never duplicated these settings. :)

74F-auto-comfort (max) windows closed. It's dang hot in Texas. Driving with the windows open harshes my mellow.

Yes it happens. If the battery needs cooling the AC will engage and you feel it through the vents.

It's much better to be old and crotchety than old, crotchety, sweaty, and smelly. The auto-comfort setting is wonderful. I refuse to compromise comfort for range. Drive the car, don't let the car drive you.

Nah, it wasn't trying to eke out every mile. It was a beautiful day, the air smelled good and fresh, and I was simply enjoying a nice leisurely drive that afternoon.

I thought it may be the traction battery cooling code kicking in, but I was surprised by the center console display trying to show me that. I guess I was worried about having the first 'real' problem with this car. So far the only troubles have been worn out tires and a blown headlight bulb.

Yep, it's a bug (or "feature", we'll never know :))
Never seen it on my car. Only once on a friend's.
Just don't drive long enough in the heat to get it to pop up, or not present in 2014. Or I already had the AC on because it's so damn hot.

Speaking words of wisdom, let it be. Let that window be.

If only I could attain such levels of Zen.
This level of Zen comes from finding peace in being content with what you have, living far below your means, not worrying about how you are going to pay bills by knocking out all debt, having a nice retirement nest egg, and doing what you want in life rather than trying to keep up with the Joneses.

I hope to be mortgage free in 3 years or less. I wish I started earlier, but I made the mistake of building a dream house that probably was too much for my own good. Luckily I've been able to outearn my stupidity.
