Live by Twitter, die by Twitter?

Musk has been very successful in using social media to propel Tesla into the headlines time and again. However, he seems to have gone too far by libeling (twice) one of the Thailand cave rescuers. This will likely cast a negative shadow on Tesla and SpaceX to which his name is tightly intertwined.

I wonder how the Musk fanboys will justify the tweets? I wonder if Musk will quickly, publicly and effusively apologize and walk back his statements? Libel can be an expensive hobby and investors will not like it one bit.

Elon Musk broadcast to his 22 million social media followers on Sunday an unfounded and disparaging (slanderous?) claim about an expert caver who criticized a miniature submarine he made. He called Unsworth, a British caver, who lives in Thailand, a "pedo" or pedophile in a now-deleted tweet. The unfounded claim came after Unsworth called Musk's miniature sub a "PR stunt."

That kind of name calling would be grounds to ban Musk from GM-Volt of course.

I think this is a serious issue of emotional stability and good judgment. If I said that on social media (not that anyone pays attention to me), I might not have a job when I show up at the office for work tomorrow.

I'm no lawyer, but I think labeling someone a pedophile and broadcasting it worldwide on Twitter could be a serious monetary issue for Musk.

Defamation is an area of law that provides a civil remedy when someone's words end up causing harm to your reputation or your livelihood. Libel is a written or published defamatory statement, while slander is defamation that is spoken by the defendant.
I'd say pedophilia could harm someone's reputation. Where would the lawsuit be filed?

Plaintiff Locale to Set Jurisdiction in Web Defamation Suits. As Internet communications continue to multiply, courts are repeatedly being asked whether a defamatory statement made by a defendant in one state or country can subject the defendant to suit in any jurisdiction the plaintiff may choose.
So apparently Thailand, or perhaps England where the (future?) plaintiff hails from.

I wonder if Musk will claim the Rosanne Barr defense (drunk or drug impaired tweeting)? I'm not sure that get's rid of the potential lawsuit, but it might help salvage a bit of his own reputation. Or perhaps there will be a quick and very private settlement. Is Michael Cohen still doing janitorial side jobs?

That's very libelous. I'd sue.

He's a disturbed boy. A signed dollar eh? Why would his signature on a dollar make it more valuable to me? Sounds like a big ego there, and it got bruised.

The boss from hell - said it before and I'm saying it again.

Musk's submarine offer was fine. His hissy-fit after it being rejected is not fine. The Thai rescue effort was superbly well organized and executed. Ragging on them because they didn't go for his dumb (to anyone who's ever been in caves like that one), untested idea is low class through and through.

"Oh. You didn't need it? You saved all the boys? Great! Well, if you want, let your dive rescue teams test it and see if it's a viable solution for future rescue efforts."

Was that hard?

Some are defending Musk on the grounds the caver called him a publicity hound and told him to shove the sub. That gave Musk license to legally defame the guy in their view.

after seeing the videos that the divers took during the rescue, there was a path that was only two feet wide. No "sub" or "balloon" could pass, even if it carried a small boy. The divers did the rescue correctly! Musk was never needed unless he donated money to pay for the rescue.

They were training some of the rescuers to use the sub but they were all rescued before training was complete. Raises the question on whether the sub could actually be used or were they just being polite?

Of course he's a PR Hound. That's now his main focus for his companies.

You don't think he is involved in any of the engineering, anywhere, do you?

Look at that whole Rocket Launch of "HIS ROADSTER' into Mars orbit (which it missed).
Was that another PR stunt, or hard, long-lasting science?

I feel slightly sad for him. He needs a vacation. Let someone else try to turn around Tesla and SolarCity for awhile.
Space X is doing fine with its 'No Bid' government funding.

Actual engineering? No. Making the lives of the engineers harder? Yes (gull wing doors - larger rear wheels - etcetera). Technically making the lives of the engineers harder is Straubel's job, but he's good at usurping his own chain of command. Exceptionally good at it.

His life is a vacation at this point. This article shows how seriously he takes his job.

The premise is:

"The only reason older white men go to Thailand is to molest young boys."

Uh... Mr. Musk? You are an older white man who went to Thailand.

Musk started his reluctant apology process.

Tesla investors urged Musk to apologize in an open letter on Tuesday, warning him that his actions were “shaking investor confidence.”

Gene Munster, a managing partner at venture capital firm Loup Ventures, said he wrote the letter on behalf of Tesla investors due to Musk’s “concerning” behavior over the last six months.

Wonder if that will stop the lawsuit or not.
