I put a ton of songs on a 16GB USB drive but there is a 1/4 second or so gap between tracks which sucks on songs that lead into the next (Like most on Dark Side of the Moon)

I own a 2012 with the HHD loaded with my iTunes Library and I use the same 16GB memory stick in my 2013 plugged into the USB port. You do have to be careful throwing and removing things from the console with the memory stick plugged in, but it does work.

You might look at a micro USB drive, I bought a 16GB one for $10 and it sticks out less than 1/4 of an inch. I'll see if I can post a picture tonight.
