Just to add to what DOD is doing on the civilian side. California will be online to use battery backup in a number of places by 2020 to augment the renewable side of the grid.

The DOD is in the cutting edge of renewables. and though not much is mentioned in the press, but they are test areas in renewables in battlefield conditions. they are fully aware of the costs, logistics and man power needed to move energy to overseas units. They also know how vulnerable the supply lines are. Indeed, in places like Afghanistan and Iraq, many of the injuries and deaths have resulted in the fuel supply lines that are targeted by the insurgents.

CPSEnergy is our municipally-owned utility here in San Antonio. They've been looking at storage for years now. I couldn't find the earliest blurb on it but did find this.

Note: CPS use to stand for City Public Service(s) - can't remember whether it was singular or plural since our utility bills include electricity, NatGas and garbage pickup on the same statement.
