I have always been a fan of the amber/red lighting at night and just thought it would be a nice feature to be able to customize accent colors in the dash.
Red light has the longest wavelength (lowest frequency) of the visible colors. This results in a lower impact on our night vision (causing the least disruption of the rod cells).
I remember reading about this elsewhere. I can find a link if people are curious.
In any event, this isn't earth moving but a nice-to-have.

This would be a great feature to have customizable interior lighting. Unfortunately most cars have LED's with a fixed color. In the old days one usually only had to open the instrument cluster and either repaint the back housing (they were usually a neon orange/green), or in some cases they used plastic color filters over the bulb, mostly for the other items such as a/c control, etc. Now, it usually requires physical replacement of each LED. I had a 2006 Mini that had the standard red BMW lighting and there were a few who went and replaced the LED's with different colors. I seem to remember blue being popular.

Yah. I suppose the blue on the door handles and elsewhere wouldn't change but I'd like to see the infotainment system and the dash itself go into "night mode" somehow. It would be a sweet software update but I guess that would probably be challenging for the dealers. I presume we cannot get any SW updates for things OTA, correct?

same here on my optioned e36 3-series 328i which was long retired.
some sort of night vision would be great.

I use an APP on a secondary (old) phone that displays a HUD via a OBDII blue tooth dongle on my lower windshield. Currently this solution works well as I use night vision red (aka astronomer's red) through another app called LUX for nighttime. As I advance in years here I cannot stand being blinded by the dashboard's LCD displays even on the lowest settings @ 4:30 PM in this winter endless night hell I choose to reside for some reason. Oh did you know u can turn off the center display too? Good for deer crossing season.

It's easy enough to replace the all the dome lamps with red LEDs. Which is what I did. Gen 1 can dim the screens pretty low too. Although when night mode is on at sunset or sunrise with the sun in your eyes, I can't even see the screens.

Personally, I loved my Saab's "night panel", which dimmed/shut off everything but the speedometer. (The other gauges, like gas, would light up if there were any warnings.) I also wish in my 2016 it was easier to turn off the main/center display. You can turn it off, but if you do anything, such as adjust the volume, it comes on again permanently. You have to constantly hit "display off".

I also find the On Star lights to be obnoxiously bright. I'm going to put black electrical tape over them.
