I have owned a 2017 Volt for just over one year and starting about a month ago I started occasionally having an issue when enter and start up the car and the center mounted 8" Infotainment display (w/ nav and bose) does not boot up. While the display still works for the backup camera display the display will be blank for everything else and the buttons and radio power/volume control do not work. I've had this happen perhaps 5 time during the past month and have found that if I shut down the car for perhaps at least 1 minute then the display will work when I start the car. Anyone else had this issue. My dealer says there are no service updates for this issue.

This happened to me once when I started my '17 and put it into reverse before the center screen initialized. The result was a black screen and nothing appeared to work. I shut down/started up again and it started normally so I just chalked it up as some kind of software glitch.

If it happens more often on your car and especially if you can reproduce it, I'd take it in for service. Never hurts to grab a video of the issue with your cell phone either just in case it decides to behave while at the dealer.

I've had my Volt for about a year, and this just happened to me yesterday. Simple solution: pull and re-insert fuse 25 ("Display") in the instrument panel fuse box. Worked great for me. Also, I've had an issue with my USB ports not working, and pulling and re-inserting fuse 26 ("Infotainment") worked for that. There's a fuse puller in the fuse box in the engine compartment. Of course, do this with the car powered down/off for good measure, and consult your manual for more information. Good luck

I've had this happen too, a couple of times. I took it to the dealer right away the last time it happened while it was still having the problem. They kept it for a few days and found that software for the HMI module needed to be updated. It hasn't happened again.

I tried this and it made no difference.

The only solution I've come up with for now is to turn the infotainment system on prior to starting the car. It boots and stays on. Otherwise almost every time I turn the car on now it goes blank and stays blank for about 15-30 seconds.

It does come on eventually but not right away.

I really don't want to take it to the dealer...I can't spend the time dealing with that and leaving my car there for a few days just for an software update.

In a couple the cases I've had, I drove the car for up to 20 min. with the display staying black the entire trip. I was only after I stopped and shut off the car (including getting out of the car) for about 1 minute then the display came up normally when I got back into the car I started up.

Update....my system has taken a complete **** now and even the USB doesn't work anymore.

Seriously...2 months in and already things are going downhill? Really?

I scoured the net and it seems this is a pretty major issue for many Gen II owners. This is a recall issue IMO and should be promptly addressed by GM/Chevy. It seems ALOT of people are having this problem and I suspect it's a faulty part. Some people are having their cars at the dealer for well over 2 weeks for this stupid issue.

Any way we can have this escalated? Just ridiculous.

I have a question for everyone who's experiencing this issue.

A) Do you have a USB stick concurrently plugged into the USB port when these issues occur?

B) Have you tried to see if these issues happen with no USB stick plugged in?

There is a reason I'm asking but before I state it, I'm curious if anyone has correlated the issues with these two scenarios.

Thanks!

I think you may be onto something. This doesn't affect me, but if you do read thru these threads, you get the sense that the USB ports are flaky, perhaps, the USB chip they use is marginal, and that the power draw is probably split between the two ports, so that having something plugged into one USB port, may adversely affect the other.

Ok so here is what I discovered. My USB drive was shorting the port. How did I find this out? I tried the drive on my PC and immediately on plugging in the drive, the PC shut down and/or froze. I tried more than one USB port on my PC and the same thing happened every single time.

Ever since I've removed my drive from the car, the infotainment system has returned to normal operation and boots up as it did the day I got the car.

Now, I did also remove fuses F25 and F26 next to the steering column and reseated them. But that has no affect until I actually removed my USB drive from the car's USB port. I'll keep people posted but for now I recommend people check their USB drives first if they have one plugged in.

Cheers

I suspect your case, with a USB memory drive failure being the cause of the issue with your car's Infotainment system, is probably unrelated to the cause of the issues others of us are having with their Volt's Infotainment system. However, the next time my screen comes up blank I'll try pulling out the USB drive and see what happens (currently my USB drive works OK plugged into PC and also works OK for playing stored mp's thru the car's infotainment system so there is no indication of a failure of the USB drive itself).

Perhaps...not sure. Give it a try and let us know what you find out. I recommend you pull the fuses first and then try. I still do believe it may be a short of some kind. My symptoms were identical to what others are seeing but like you say, it may be pure coincidence that the issues end up being similar.

This also happened to me in my 2016 Volt a few months ago, and it did seem related to having my Android smartphone plugged into one of the USB ports. But a week ago a seemingly unrelated problem caused me to call Onstar for an instant diagnosis. While they couldn't actually diagnose the problem, they informed me that I had SIX recall notices or service bulletins that I hadn't responded to. (I had thought I was only ignoring one that didn't seem to pertain to me.) But I decided to take the car into my local dealer for handling these notices and recalls. It took a couple of hours and a number of computer downloads to the car, but so far the car now works perfectly.

There is a known issue with the screen itself failing to work when first booted up when the display is hot, such as in a car that has been heat soaked... It slowly re-appears from a ghost image after a few minutes.

I unplugged the USB drive from my system about 3 weeks ago and also have not recently connected my android phone. Today, for the first time since then, the infotainment screen failed to come up when I started the car after a short stop at CVS today. I then shut the car down and got out of the car and move away (so the electronic key was not being detected) for about a minute before then getting back in and starting the car and then system booted up correctly. So this issue can happen with nothing plugged into the USB ports.

Have you tried removing and re-seating the USB and infotainment fuses?

I had already tried removing and reinstalling the fuse also I had already experienced the same issue with the USB drive removed. I took my Volt to my local Chevy dealer today and they installed firmware updates. It will take to a few weeks of use to confirm if that really takes care of the problems with infotainment system.

UPDATE - Its now been 3 months since my dealer updated the firmware in my Volt hoping to take care of the Infoentertainment issue and the problem has not reoccurred. So at this point it appears it was a firmware issue.
