Electronic devices in general seem to trigger that sensor; I have a feeling it must be very susceptible to electromagnetic interference. There's a shallow elongated slot to the right of the shifter where I normally keep my phone, as it stands up and is in the perfect position for connecting to Android Auto (or CarPlay for you)
Is my iPhone 7 too heavy?
I was driving alone with my siren red Chevy Volt 2017. I connected my iPhone 7, and then just threw it into the passenger seat. After driving a few feet, I heard bong-bong-bong, then I looked at the dash, there were no messages there. So I was suspecting it was the latest recall service that I did yesterday. Then after I got into a stop sign, made a right turn, then bong-bong-bong sound came on again. This got me worried and drove on. Then after some time, I noticed a glowing red light on the overhead where OnStar area is. My golly, it says that the passenger airbag is on and my passenger has no seat belt! So I grabbed the iPhone and placed it under the DIC, and the growing red light turned off. An iPhone 7 needed a seat belt? Really?
Well, anyway, I tried different spots on the passenger seat, and yes, some areas won't trigger the passenger sensor while in other areas, the iPhone 7 is enough to trigger the passenger sensor!

Your phone isn't to heavy. It's too capacitive. The seat sensor doesn't just use weight to gauge occupancy.
My '13 Volt did the same thing with a very light laptop that was off.
The stupid thing is, my 31 pound dog DOESN'T set the sensor off when he occasionally rides shotgun. But my slightly less weighty iPhone 5 does.
Must be having the entire internet inside that device that tips the balance.

Same phone and same problem on a MY17 Equinox...
I've had the 3.5mm aux cable sitting on the seat set off the passenger alert.
Makes me think the occupancy sensor operates via some sort of magnetic principle. I've never seen another manufacturer's seats behave like GM's...I've had the 3.5mm aux cable sitting on the seat set off the passenger alert.
My sunshade also makes the seatbelt alarm go off, so it's not a weight issue, but more an electrical interference issue.
Plus I've had mine replaced once because they would go off right after my daughter got out of the car and popped up a service airbag message on the DIC. The crazy thing was this started happening 70 miles before the bumper to bumper expired, but the dealership couldn't schedule me until a week and 1000 miles later. Plus the first day it happened, I didn't think to snap a picture and I had a trip to Danville for a track meet followed by a trip to Chicago O'hare airport. This is second time I read about this issue. It's interesting because my bag that I bring to work is full of gadgets. A Galaxy Tab, iPad and Laptop, all powered on. I always set it on my passenger seat and I've never had the seat belt chime go off or have the airbag armed. Apparently a lone iPhone 7 is enough to cause it though.
I know for sure that the sensor works because I've had a few passengers who didn't put their seat belts on and it chimes after about 2 minutes of driving.

I put my 7 4.7" on the passenger seat and I've never had that happen
I got tired of the phone sliding on the seat, so I was happy to find the Volt Phone. Attaches to either drivers side or passenger side up rite. Magnetic disc holds your phone firmly to the stand.
