This is an interesting proposition. Iron isn't toxic, whereas other mixtures such as nickel-iron are. Iron is also readily available. I searched for additional details about iron batteries and their benefits including how long they can last (15 years or more would be ideal) as well as energy density, but have not been able to find much information. More research is needed.

Generally, the oversizing is to take into account multiple "non-productive' days. (cloudy, rainy, whatever) Not terribly uncommon here in the Northeast to get a week straight of lousy weather. The last thing you want to do is regularly overdraw your battery bank, shortening its life, and costing you more in the long run. One of the other unavoidable problems I must deal with is the power-hungry septic pump motor. (1,560 watts, but I haven't calculated cycle time yet)
