Now that Apple has announced that Carplay will support 3rd party mapping software (google maps, waze etc), I wonder if it will require new firmware in the Volt.
I've always understood that this was an "Apple" issue. Google doesn't care about the platforms except as a conduit to your data. If Apple lets Waze (owned by Google) or Google Maps on Carplay, then they will do what they need to do to get those apps on Carplay. Will be interesting to see when this is actually accomplished. My understanding is that Google and Waze (now just Google) never created the necessary programming in their apps to allow this to work on CarPlay as a means to push more people to Android Phones.
It's the other way around. Can't blame Google here for Apple walled garden policy. It's good that Apple eventually realized that Apple Maps really sucks. Will be interesting to see when this is actually accomplished. My understanding is that Google and Waze (now just Google) never created the necessary programming in their apps to allow this to work on CarPlay as a means to push more people to Android Phones.
My exact concern also. I have a very early 2017 that won't take OTA radio updates. I wonder if a 2018 radio swap from a wrecked Chevrolet will work in our cars.[/QUOTE]My concern is that the announcement mentions Carplay 2. I hope we don't need any work by GM to have access to Carplay 2 on our cars.
I'm disappointed that Waze is behind the curve on updating their software to take advantage of iOS 12/CP2. I've had the beta for iOS12 on my phone for months and it has been working really well. I tried to sign up to beta test Waze on CP, but they are apparently extremely selective w/r/t allowing folks to beta test. For those interested:

"Google" -- Waze is a Google product as of many years now.I'm disappointed that Waze
.. which is a competing product. Giving away free software that gets all the updates FIRST on the platform and phones you sell is usual and customary. Welcome to capitalism. Have a donut. They're $2.is behind the curve on updating their software to take advantage of iOS 12/CP2.
I don't think Apple and Alphabet compete the way that you are implying."Google" -- Waze is a Google product as of many years now.
