Insane M.S.R.P. Reductions Of New Chevy Volt Extended Range Electric Vehicle's, Gen 1 Through Gen 2 Over 7 Year Model Run = Now Stunningly Inexpensive Used/Second Hand Chevy Volt EREV's!

MY2011 Chevy Volt EREV MSRP $41,130.00

MY2017 Chevy Volt EREV MSRP $34,095.00

The cost, MSRP, of the MY2017 Chevy Volt Extended Range Electric Vehicle has dropped over $7,000.00 since MY2011 was released in late December, 2010.

Never, in the history of the North American Automotive Industry has a new car price reduction spread over 7 model year occurred to such magnitude if ever, at all!

Former N. American GM President Mark Reuss published this Tweet, dated August 6th, 2013.

"mruss @GMdudeinNa
@MBurden_dn @GM
When we cut cost out of our Volt through engineering and development, we will pass it on to our customers."

Extraordinary MSRP Pricing Reductions over less then 6 calendar years.

Unheard of in over 100 years of automotive sticker shocking in the USA.

The Fed $7,500 Tax Credit

Signed into law under President Bush, The Energy Independence and Security Act of 2007 designated a Federal Tax Credit for purchasers of Electric Fueled Vehicle's, EV's PHEV's and EREV's of up to $7,500.00, of their tax obligation, based on Traction Battery Size.

Full $7,500.00 Fed Tax Credit if Traction Battery was 16 kWh or more and income qualified; lesser amounts awarded for smaller Traction Battery designations.

If Electric Fueled Vehicle was and is leased the leasing company is awarded the full Fed Tax Credit, $7,500.00 For Volt, LEAF, BMWi3, Cadillac ELR, Spark EV, Ford Fusion EV, resulting in significant pass through monthly savings.

This continues through current sales until 200,000 State Side OEM vehicle sales has been reached.

This $7,500.00 tax credit passing through to resale valuations has reduced greatly the cost of used, second hand, Chevy Volt EREV's, Nissan LEAF's, BMW i3's, Cadillac ELR's, Fiat 500e's, Kia Soul EV's, Mitsubishi i-MiEV's, Smart Electric Drive's, Volkswagen E-Golf's and Mercedes B-Class Electric Drive's to name a few!

Note:
Used Tesla Model S and its variations seem to be holding justifiable high valuations and are for the most part unaffected thus far.

Used, second hand Chevrolet Volt Extended Range Electric Vehicle at an Extraordinary inexpensive price point.

Combining both the over $7,000.00 in MSRP reductions and the $7,500.00 in market assumed Fed Tax Credit result in near $15,000.00 in 'Funny Money' artificially depreciating and devaluating pricing in used/second hand MY2011 through MY2015 Chevy Volt EREV's.

As stated in the opening, NEVER in the history of the North American Auto Industry has such a large sum of 'Funny Money' standing valuation depreciations, ever occurred.

Not only has it left knowledgeable automotive writers issuing idiotic Electric Fueled Vehicle retained value articles, professional Residual Value Determiner's confused and uncertain but now has resulted in used/second hand EV, PHEV and EREV buyers in a position to literally buy a used Electric Fueled Vehicle at an insane price!

$15,000.00 of 'Funny Money' filtering down to used Chevy Volt EREV's make them affordable for all!

Imagine a then new MY2011, Motor Trend's Car Of The Year, US News, Number One Used Upscale Midsized Car**, selling new at $44,900.00, now , used with 65,000 miles now average, second hand/used priced at $11,500.00.

Now you know why!

So true at least in my case. My 2013 Volt listed for $43,500 and I paid $24,000. I got the federal tax credit of $7500, the Illinois cash rebate of $4000 and GM's $5500 rebate. Tesla offered me $11K as a trade on a CPO MS, and when I pushed back they had all that info to justify their offer, I didn't have the guts to tell them I also got another $2500 from the dealer on top of all their other credits/rebates.

So to be fair and honest they were more than fair on their offer of $11K for a car that cost me $24K 3 years ago. I passed and will re-engage with them this fall.

Not so fast. The base model of those two years are very different. If you added all the options to the 2017 that would make it equivalent to a 2011, (i.e. leather seats, heated seats, etc.) the MSRP remains about the same.

The base 2011-2015, was cloth seats, no heated seats. about the only difference between 11/17 was the 2011 had the garage door opener and powered charge door unlock / open
Current valuations should not be surprising because 20% average annual depreciation is not unusual. At that rate the current value of a 2011 with an original MSRP of $45k would decline as follows

NEW $45.0k
EOY1 $36.0k
EOY2 $28.8k
EOY3 $23.0k
EOY4 $18.4k
EOY5 $14.7k
EOY6 $11.8k

The actual value after 6 years implies that the valuation has held up quite well after the initial hit due to the tax credit and incentives.

FYI, There is a new policy here that car dealers must become sponsors to post their ads. Sundance has only occasionally posted ads, but it still applies. I'll do the same as I did for another and give you this one bite at the apple. But future posts like the above will be deleted. Unless you become a sponsor of course. Contact the member "Admin" for sponsorship details.

I may be wrong but something does not sound right. If the base price of the 2013 was 41K then all the options were only 3k more. I still dont think it is apples to apples.

Sorry you left out NAV was standard, DVD/CD player, 30Gb hard drive, Bose premium audio, 5 years of free Onstar, and an EVSE that you could set to 12 amps and not have to deal with again.

Steverino, I didn't notice any specific Sundance sales pitch from Thomas. Nonetheless, in order to allow him to participate, perhaps the admins can offer Thomas the opportunity to change his account name. His account name does precede the new policy.

I re-read the post and agree. Not really a classified ad. My bad. All's good.

I got my $44k MSRP 2013 for $21k including state sales tax. So the insane MSRP price reductions aren't all that insane when you look at insane discounts on top of that. Folks who purchased 2015 models after gen2s arrived were also handsomely rewarded. If history repeats itself the 2018 model year will see insane manufacturers rebates. So everyone chomping at the bit thinking they absolutely need a new volt today should try as hard as they can and hold out for even better deals, when the bolt and tesla model 3 are both shipping and dealer lots are filled with volts they can't move. Remember, supply and demand.

I have owned 2 base models, no nav, no HD, yes on onStar for the 2011,2012 changed to 3 years for the 2013. Yes the crap Leer EVSE could be set to 12 amps and stay there, but they also had a recall and don't last long and can't be modded for 240V like the Clipper Creek ones can

My window sticker list the NAV and 30Gb HD as standard. In 5.5 years my "crap" EVSE has never failed to charge my Volt. I did change out the original EVSE due to the recall after 1 year, NOT because it stopped working. The replacement works just fine thank you. I plugged it in when I got it, and have never unplugged it. 12v L1 charging gets the job done for me and don't see the need to waste dollars on an L2 installation - maybe in the future when my Volt get on in years and I feel the need to go to a long range BEV.
