Twice now on my 2017 Volt the infotainment system has locked itself up. No sound, can't change the radio station, won't recognize the attached iPhone, seems to think it has a bluetooth connection even when the phone is off.

I searched the forums and there was some discussion of TSB #17-NA-025, but if you read to the end of the thread this turned out to be a dead end for Volt owners. Plus the discussion seemed to center around USB sticks.

Simply stopping and restarting the car a moment later won't fix the issue, but it's OK by the next morning.

Has anybody else encountered this?

Charles.

Mine does it once in a while. The first few times it happened I tried all sorts of things to wake it up and nothing worked. Eventually, it came back.

I use a big thumb drive almost exclusively. The lock up seems to only happen when I first startup the car. I've come to the conclusion the system is doing a periodic indexing check of the drive. I think messing around with it by pushing play/pause/next song/off/browse repeatedly at that time just makes it mad, so I just listen to the radio for a few minutes and try going back to my media later. This strategy has been working well for me.

We all have our bad moments. Just give the car a little space/time to calm down and sort things out.

I also find the USB port gives up the ghost occasionally.

Mine does this only when the 32gb USB stick is connected. I've switched to a 2gb and it never happens.
It might also be that my 32g also contains non music files. That could throw an entertainment device into a coma.

The infotainment system will occasionally lock up when connecting an iPhone to it for use with Apple CarPlay. Never used a USB drive with the infotainment system. Also one USB port reliably works ok with Apple CarPlay while the other is not as reliable. Car did have infotainment software upgrade back in the early spring to add Android Auto as it was not installed on the car at time of purchase (March 2016).

Usually the infotainment system lock-up is fixed by shutting the car off, walking away with the fob at 40 to 50 ft. Return to car, start-up and infotainment system will be back to normal.

Yes. I have posted about it before a few times and have reported it to my dealership and directly to GM. In all instances they either cant find a fault or blame Carplay/Apple for the glitch. Its annoying because you really cant change anything, channels, radio/media and the OnStar button has no audio either which has the potential to be a safety issue. I suggested to them that we needed a "reboot" option for the infotainment system but I wont hold my breath on that one ....

I have been able to reproduce this error a few times, typically by plugging in the iPhone to a USB port before switching on the car. If the Carplay splash screen is displayed on your phone before the mylink home-screen comes up on the dash then you maybe have a 50-50 chance of this happening to you. sometimes you can seem to clear the issue by playing around with the home button and rotating the volume button or holding down the button as soon as your mylink audio comes on but its not a consistent fix and doesn't always work, or perhaps its even a coincidence.no way to tell ... just happy the system works at that point.

I now try to make sure I enter the car and only connect the USB cable after the car has booted up the infotainment screen and the problem does not seem to occur as often ... although it does happen occasionally. Its definitely a glitch somewhere between Carplay/MyLink systems but apparently its impossible for anyone to nail it down.

I have also recently started using an Android phone (tethered to my iPhone dataplan) so I can get Waze on my screen. This same problem has not occurred while using Android Auto so far. not sure if this means its a Carplay only issue or if I have just been lucky so far !
