Ford consider this and added a feature called EV+ to its EV's. Via GPS, it recognizes up to 5 locations, like home or work, and will allow the car to dip into its EV reserve so as not to start the ICE when you have nearly reached your destination. It has its limits too but works very well.

Now that's a feature that all Volt owners could appreciate! Maybe we'll get that in the Gen3. 8^)
