The Volt never really does gas-only. Even when the battery is drained and the car turns the engine on, there's another kilowatt hour or so in reserve which it uses for fast acceleration and hill climbing.
Between that reserve and the lower voltage drop in the pack from the engine providing power, Volt 0-60 times are generally slightly faster on gas.
