2014 Chevy Volt

There are a number of horn alarms I would LOVE to turn off. I do not see any way to turn alarms off in the screen interface.

The horn honks when I get out of the car (when I have the keys in my pocket) and walk around the car. This happens when the car is on and when I have just turned it off and I get out and walk around the car.

The car honks when I leave the keys in the car when it is running.

Can anyone help with discovering how to turn all these irritating and loud alarms off?

Thanks!

Join the club.

The only way to disable them all is to disable the horn entirely.
One user put a switch in-line to do just that.
But I would think most of us are not into splicing wires to disable something that is computer controlled.

The only two you can disable are fob left inside alert, and charge cord theft alert - those are in the menus in the computer.
The former should reduce your honks.
Exiting the car while still on cannot be disabled except as above. It will always triple honk if the car is left on and all the doors close without a key inside.

Go to the infotainment system.
Press home.
Config, vehicle settings and look for options similarly named to those. Disable them.
See page 5-53 of the manual
Comfort and Convenience:
-charge cord theft alert (honks when you unplug vehicle and it is locked)
-remote left in veh. alert (honks when the fob is left inside the car and all doors close)

I have those settings turned off and I don't get any annoying loud honks any more. The one thing I have to watch out for is stepping out of the car with it left on. It will honk if I do that unless I turn the car off first, or leave the keys inside, or leave the door open.

The only honk left is the soft honk when I plug in the EVSE. But that is not annoying to me.

Ganking the above solid state horn relay out of the Rear Compartment Fuse Block will 100% silence any dual horn noise out of the Gen1 but now your horn will also not work anymore!:D

Pushbutton Mods to Enable/Disable Triple-Honk Vehicle ON Warning and Auto-Off recall

Otherwise there is a simple guide linked above that I posted a couple years ago showing how a simple pushbutton mod on my Gen1 can alleviate those unwanted/undesired horn noises!

The honk when you exit and leave the car running was a software change spurred by a near disaster of a forum member several years ago. If you leave the car on inadvertently, in your garage, with no battery buffer, the ICE can start up and poison the garage with CO. Best to just condition yourself to shut it off before exit, or live with the warning honk.

Carbon Monoxide Suicide

More of a knee-jerk reaction by GM since it would be really hard to off yourself nowadays with all the emission controls in place on vehicles like the Volt as explained in the link above. Although these facts didn't stop GM from 'fixing' this non-issue on the Volt yet you could still leave most non-EV vehicles engines running all day long in the garage that don't have this auto-off 'feature'!

Somms has it right. GM has too many paranoid lawyers in the house. I didn't have that stupid "upgrade" done and never will. Especially since it's a hugely annoying triple honk. I've turned off all honking except the little "I'm charging" honk, which I kinda like.

The same situation could happen with our Camry hybrid, or a Prius. I don't see Toyota being too concerned about it
