Gents,
My courtesy data via GM is used up, I would like to use my phone data for navigation and texting vs the car's data plan. Does anyone know how to switch this over? The navigation works on my phone but it does not seem to work with Apple play.

You connect your phone's Apple lightning cable between your phone and a usb outlet on the car. The Projection icon on the car's center home screen changes to Carplay. If it doesn't work what do the screens say?

Try turning off Wi-Fi on your iPhone before you start your Volt. Under iPhone Cellular settings be sure that Apple Maps is enabled for Cellular Data.

Only other issue to mention here is that you need to use a genuine apple cord to connect the phone to the car. Other cords tend to disconnect car play after a few minutes.

OK so I think it is somewhat working but now as I try to put in an address to follow directions I am getting a SSL error. Hmmm. Anyone else with Iphone getting this issue? I will do some googling.
I've seen that error in a Chevrolet Malibu rental car when I tried to connect my iPhone to the rental car's OnStar WiFi and LTE service. I was able to use CarPlay very effectively in the rental car but I had to switch my iPhone so that Apple Maps was able to use Cellular Data (my iPhone's data plan.)

every few years clean the lint out of the socket at the bottom of the iPhone

Plus the lightning cable is not just a cable there is a so called authentication chip in there as well.

I keep a new cable around to test if it looks like I am having data or charging problems.

In case you were looking to use your phone to access the internet instead of OnStar, you can.

The 2018 model has a WiFi feature that allows you to use your phone to connect. This allows you to do updates and use the new MyLink purchases without OnStar.

2016-17 models may be able to get the MyLink software update.
