Every night, possibly several times per day, I get a text message that says my car has been charged, etc. I want to either disable those, or, ideally, change the phone number those are going to as they consume my cell account minutes when a SMS is received.

How or where can I change that phone number?

Pretty sure that is part of your OnStar account. You should have a webpage login access where you can update those settings. Certain alerts can be turned on/off or set to email, etc. Pretty sure you can change your phone number there as well. If you have trouble with that, you could call OnStar as well.

You can just reply "stop" to the onstar text and it won't alert you anymore. As for changing the number, you might have to call onstar for that unless there is an option to change the number somewhere in their account settings page.

I also started getting these text messages suddenly. I just went into the OnStar app and turned the notifications on (they were off.) the next day I then went back to the OnStar app and turned them off. I’ve not gotten another text from OnStar.

Check your OnStar or Chevy cel phone app. There is a bug in it where these "notifications" will turn on automatically. You can't erase your cel phone and OnStar is turning them on automatically.

This has happened twice to me.

If your notifications are on in your cel phone app, please contact OnStar and complain. This is a violation of the law. (Companies can't send you text messages overnight and they can't send them to you without your express consent.)

I think you’ve misunderstood the TCPA. Service calls (which this falls under) does not require express written consent. Sales calls (where your dealer calls you) does in fact require your express written consent on a mobile phone.

I don’t know where exactly you think this is against the law. You’ve provided OnStar’s terms and agreements, not the federal law that would cause OnStar to be held accountable for. Did you text stop and they didn’t stop? While that’s in breech of their agreement, it’s not a violation of TCPA. Take that to them, maybe they will give you a free OnStar package for a year.

Service calls (or texts, TCPA defines them as one in the same) have never required express written consent. As long as my staff don’t try to sell you something, your cell phone is fair game as long as I can prove we’ve had an existing business relationship.

OnStar can do this in the above discussed issue and is not liable in the least of violating TCPA.

If you’d like to educate yourself, just run a google search over “are service calls covered under the TCPA.” Read the material available and stop spewing BS across the Internet.

The tip on toggling the setting has helped in the past and double check via the web to mychevy as well as the App.

Thanks for changing your attitude on the point.

It may be against the law in some states. It’s up to you to identify if it’s illegal in your state. It is not illegal automatically. And it certainly is not a federal violation of TCPA. Nor does it need a time of day filter.

And no, OnStar does not need your permission to text you, so long as it’s service related. Good luck getting compensation. As I suggested, you might be able to get a free year of service from them. Give it a try and see what you can earn.

Missed this the other day. I have already changed my setting to Severino's number. Thanks for the tip!

When you say this was covered in another thread, do you mean the automatic tripping of the notification setting? We are toggling the notifications "Off" and the mobile app is automatically turning them back "On" without our input. Was this previously covered?
