Don't count on being able to use a tow eye with your Gen 1. Check to see if you have one. I believe that only Amperas and Volts for other markets where it is mandated have the hardware behind that cover to receive a tow eye. My car has a space to store it but didn't come with one.

This doesn't help with your question about a Gen 2 but might if you find yourself in a ditch some snowy night.
