I recently discovered that it is possible to update the maps on the Infotainment system. NavTeq which supplies mapping for Garmin and most major auto manufacturers, including GM, offers the ability to update your maps.

NavTeq is now called Here.com. Apparantly, the Big Three German auto makers bought Navteq to preserve it from being gobbled-up and dispersed by Google.

In any event, there is a 2017 Update for the 2016 Volts, and I am being told by GM that my cars, even though built in early 2016 have the latest maps. I am skeptical. I would like to prove this for myself.

On the 2016 Volt update page is shown the three products the new update replaces:

This navigation map update is a replacement for the following GM part numbers:

How do I determine what part numbers, and/or versions are installed currently?

While we're waiting for the definitive answer, I know the maps in my Volt are old. I can tell because there is a new road in VT that is not in my maps. It's fun watching the NAV trying to figure out what is going on when I drive there. Perhaps there are some new roads in your area that could prove the age of your map data?

There are Garmin nuvi's with free lifetime map updates, OTA traffic and weather advisories, some have built in Dash Cams that do a cool real time overlay of camera info. You can take it with you on vacation ,,, AND,,, it way less expensive than a 'Map Update' for the clunky OEM system..

I do not enjoy hooking up my smartphone with Google Maps or my Garmin NUVI 3590-LM. I want to simplify my life.

I have, on several occasions, experienced no maps of streets that were new 5 years ago. In discussing the system with a street mapper with Here.com, they are driving all over the place to keep their maps current. I was very very impressed.

On the Gen1 there's a software version list in the radio, if the update is applied the part number will be listed.

It would appear that's not the case on the Gen2. The actual instructions are to search for a specific Starbucks in Detroit. Destination > POI > Detroit, MI > Starbucks. If you see a listing for Starbucks at 777 Woodward Ave then you have the latest version.

Pretty sure my '14 has an older version. Caddy sure does charge a lot for a map update!

Are you guys saying that I can get the same update from a 3rd party?
