You do not need to start the combustion engine. The Velite will do that automatically when it needs to be done. The car is smart.

It's about once every six weeks but you don't need to worry about it, the car will let you know. On start up you'll get a message asking if you want to start the engine. You can say no but the next day, or if a start is later than that, on the next start, the engine will come on. It's a separate mode called Engine Maintenance.

GM designed this car to take care of itself. There are TWO modes used to do this:

1. Engine Maintenance Mode aka EMM - Engine comes on about every 6 weeks to test all systems. This burns about .03 gallons of gas and takes about 10 minutes to complete. This assume the ICE has not been used for any other mode during that time.

2. Fuel Maintenance Mode aka FMM - Engine comes on after about a year of not ADDING any fuel to the tank. The engine will run to use all the fuel in the tank. You can reset to "counter" by adding some fresh fuel if you have space.

MY 2017 just went through the FMM this past June when it forced me to burn off all the gas the dealer put it when my Volt was delivered in Aug 2016. For me it was a waste of 6 gallons of gas.

Also suggest down loading the Owners Manual PDF from Chevrolet's web page.

Good luck and welcome aboard. BTW where are you located.

It's only a waste if the car just sits there going nowhere to use up the fuel.

The car keeps track of use by temperature. As long as the gas engine gets up to spec temperature once every 6 weeks, you won't have EMM turn on. The car takes care of itself.

Thanks for joining. Will be interesting to see how GM EVs do in China. I have been to Shanghai myself.
