You don't use the key to start the vehicle. Key is used to open a door by prying off a piece of the door handle. Dealer stocks these pry off pieces as they get damaged.
To start the car with a dead key fob battery, lift the rubber mat in the center console and place the dead key fob on the fob shaped mark.
Since I can unlock the door with the Onstar app on my phone, the only time I can see using the key is if I have a dead 12 volt battery.

The slot in the g2 dash doesn't have a working cylinder. It's only purpose is to get the fob as close as possible to the sensor in case you have a dying fob battery. So with a g2, even without a slot for the key, it's not a loss. Just move themfob closer to the center console and push the start button.

There's possibly also a little inducer that matches a coil in the fob that allows just enough power induction to activate the response. Like a low-power proximity card. At least, that would be the case if I were designing it.
