I am considering buying a Volt but one thing holding me back is that I do not have a garage.

My home charging station would have to be outdoors subject to the weather.

I live in the San Francisco Bay area so I don't have to worry about blizzards but we do get some pretty good rain storms.

I was hoping to get some input from anyone who has an outdoor home charging station as to the viability of such a setup.

Pefectly fine. You can find that most EVSE are indoor/outdoor. If you're opting for outdoor, make sure the charge cord is 25ft or longer.

I'd get a portable one. That way you can bring it inside during particularly bad weather. The outlet/hardwire would need to be weatherproof either way.

I live in the Northeast where we get every kind of weather; it's snowing outside right now. My GE Wattstation is hardwired and mounted to the side of my house. I've been charging every night for over a year regardless of weather with no problems at all. I try to keep rain & snow out of the plug & socket when inserting or removing the plug, and that hasn't been an issue. Many folks here have mentioned being pleased with Clipper Creek charging stations, and they're less costly than the GE. But I liked the looks of the GE and the ease of storing the cord, and so far it's worked perfectly.

You should consider hardwiring it. If it is portable it might be gone one day. I am installing the Leviton 40amp charger in my garage and it is portable. If I was installing it outside it would be hardwired. leviton has a very heavy duty 25 ft cord too.

I use the standard EVSE that comes with the Volt exclusively. I charge out doors with no overhead protection and haven't had too many issues. The one problem I am having is the EVSE falling apart. The case has split apart so I had to glue it together. The plug portion that connects to the cable is split apart. But, with all that, it has continued to work through rain, snow, and sleet. I got shocked once but it was from the extension cord.. standard tingley feeling.
