My 2017 is my third Volt. I was shocked when I discovered that there was no way to activate my gate and garage except to hang remotes on the visor just like I did 20 years ago. This $42,000 car is equipped like a $18,000 econocar.
Now it is going to cost me $600 to have an aftermarket shop install one. Hard to remain a champion for the Volt when the bean counters cut out essentials for a "Premium" car.

WOW! $600!!!!
Do you have any experience with a Dremel Tool? If you have the Premium Model with a dimming mirror, there is 12 volts already in the ceiling. If you have the LT Model you can replace the mirror with one that has HomeLink. Check out this thread:

The HomeLink on my 2011 transmits a much weaker signal than the clicker I got from my HOA. Perhaps GM got tired of dealing with HomeLink complaints.

Try using the clicker.

I notice that after years of issues, GM removed the remotely activated charger cover from the new Volts. Sometimes you jest have to declare victory and go home.

Thanks for the great info. Unfortunately my skill with a Dremel was established years ago when I screwed up a project and was forced to turn in my tool. I'll show the information on the thread to the shop so they can see how "easy" it is. They should drop the price.

My 2017 Volt is my third, but I knew from doing research GM omitted HomeLink. So I dug out my old clickers, replaced the batteries and I'm back in business. Now we can be a glass half full or glass half empty owner. What I discovered is my clicker has a much better range than the OEM HL setup. I can get my doors to start opening at least one house further away. I no longer have to slow and wait for my door to fully open as I did with the OEM HL.

Suggest you pocket the $600 and use the clicker that came with your opener.

And another thread about the lack of Homelink.

Just get a Homelink rear-view mirror from Bobs mirrors on ebay and its and easy swap. There are a couple of different threads on here about those.

Doing a little research would ave eliminated the 'shocked' aspect.
There are one or two threads about retrofitting homelink in the Volt or most any other vehicle. Search the forum for homelink

I added it to my 2000 GMC Sierra Z71 for about $25 years back :)

I was shocked too. It was just something I assumed there would be an option for. There are so many other things drawing your attention when switching to electric vehicles that it is easy to miss the thing that is not there. For sure, this is not the most important thing, but it bugged me enough to cut into my brand new $40k car with a dremel. Anyway, there are solutions.

The best part is if you whine/complain to Chevy they'll suggest you move on from the Volt and recommend the all new Malibu Hybrid (which has the opener!), this has been verified three times on Chevy Chat...

The most frustrating part is Chevy choose not to evolve the Volt's "plan" where most folks are going to plug it every night with a 120V...For the overwhelming majority, that's in a garage...

All we can do is speculate to why this came to be, it seems like it's intentionally omitted from all Chevy sub-compacts and compacts...

The Homelink on my 2006 SUV is no longer compatible with my new garage door opener, and most new garage door openers. I could get a repeater that makes it compatible but I just I use the free remote that came with the garage opener. It works better than the Homelink that came with my Gen 1 Volt. A similar unit should not cost $600!!!! $50, perhaps?

Agreed that Chevy should have included one with Gen 2 Volt but lack of it should not be a deal breaker. If you don't want a remote clipped to your visor, there are replacement mirrors with Homelink in them ... maybe that will work. Those should cost about $200. Some even have built-in dashcams.

GM if you are there...

I am NOT impressed that Homelink is not standard or at least part of one of the driver convenience or other option packages in the Gen2.

Not even the sales guy realized it.

Tell the decision makers that I don't think I should have to call a wrecker to source a used part to install in a new premium vehicle. Obviously they do.

Did those models recently have a major design upgrade like the Volt 2? If not, perhaps GM will drop HomeLink in the future.
Yes, Malibu and Camaro were all new along with the Volt, they both have it...The MY18 Equinox is also all new and has it...The Volt also lacks power seats and a sunroof, perhaps GM will drop them in the future too?
