I am thinking about upgrading my headlights with HID's so I can have brighter lights at night. I am looking at white which I was told is compliant with my state's laws. I had HID xenon lights on my previous car and really miss the clarity compared with the OEM halogens that come standard. Anyone have experiences (poz and neg) with HIDs on your Volt? Thanks!

I bought these https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00FC22HUM/ref=oh_aui_search_detailpage?ie=UTF8&psc=1 back in April and they worked great up until about a month ago. My left head light would not always fire up, so I had to turn the lights on and off a few times before they would both fire up.

I contacted the seller and they sent me a new ballast, which I installed yesterday but it went out again this morning.

Outside of that they've been great lol

We had a problem with an '04 BMW that the headlights would intermittently work properly like that as well (after a major accident repair). The also replaced the ballast and double checked the wiring while the whole time my step-dad was insisting the bulb was the problem. Turns out he was right and the bulb turned out to be the problem. Maybe swap bulbs and see if the problem switches sides.

FWIW: Prior to switching over to aftermarket LED headlamps, I had the same cheap HIDs installed in my Gen1 but had to install a dedicated relay to feed the HID ballasts consistent 12V otherwise they would be unstable and inconsistent in firing if using the same PWM voltage from the BCM as the stock incandescent headlamps...

FWIW I believe Diode Dynamic offers a Volt specific kit. Whether any HID conversion is really compliant is another matter.

Deal with the RetroFit Source. They are the best. They will talk to you on the phone or by email and will be extremely professional about it.

Just be ready for a warranty replacement or 2 to get good ballasts. They've cheaper out recently. Avoid trying to deal with Andrew if you call them. He doesn't care about customers for some reason but most of the other guys are good.

The OE projectors aren't very good at all with HID. I'd recommend LED over HID without a retrofit. The OE projectors have to much glare and a terrible cutoff with HID.

Before I switched out the ballast the other head light went out, so both sides have started having issues.

That sounds like it might be the issues. Do you have any recommendation for what relay to get? Amazon?

In case anyone is following this. The seller is sending me a relay wiring harness to resolve the issue.

The seller has been nothing but incredible throughout the whole process and is quick to respond to questions.

I received the relay harness but I wanted to give it some time before following up. The relay resolved the issues I had.

The seller is extremely good at following up with any questions and quickly sent out parts to resolve the issue. I highly recommend them.
