I was on the highway last weekend in Hold mode, with the ACC on. I noticed a slight, but constant, on/off hesitation in the propulsion. (I don't experience the same thing in EV mode.) Is this an issue anyone else has experienced, or was it my imagination, or maybe even the strong winds that day? We are going on a road trip next week when Hold mode will be used extensively. I'm hoping it was really nothing.

Depending on highway speed you may experience this. I notice it when over 65 MPH and first turn on HM. I don't really notice it much after that other than going up a hill. It is likely happening as the engine is working to assist both maintaining battery level and drive the wheels.

If you really want to experience something strange, wait until you floor it to pass just as its already doing that switching. If the timing is just right (wrong) you'll get a really weird "mushy" feeling for about half a second, just long enough to wonder if something stalled, and then it'll finish adjusting and away you go.

I've had that a couple of times since i've owned the car. It doesn't phase me anymore but it's still a weird sensation.

OP has a gen2... it's my understanding that this lag is gone on gen2 due to the new transmission design (doesn't need to slow down and then lock the ring gear before applying full MGB power). I cheekily refer to this as "turbo lag" even though it's not, it just feels kind of like turbo lag.

Volt never goes when you step on it in gas mode. Always a ~1 second lag which is annoying. But that's using gas for ya
On first generation cars, that's mode switching, dropping back into series. Second generation cars don't do that, and should have immediate response.

I don't recall a 1 second lag when flooring it in HOLD or CD mode. I'll have to pay attention next time.

I'm going to have a few days now to further investigate. My garage will be inaccessible and I'll have no choice but to run on dino fuel for a while :( . It seems so last century :) .

What you're experiencing is called "Chuggle" and it's a pretty well documented issue. Search the forums and you'll find lots of good info on it.
Agreed. Mine does it and I hate it. I've put quite a few gas miles on now and in my opinion it has not gotten better.

I looked up some of the "Chuggle" threads, and that is exactly what the experience is.

A side note about Hold mode. When driving in Hold, the engine stays off at traffic lights. Then always starts out from a stop in EV mode, and only switches to the engine at 10-20mph. The switch over is seamless. And in that way you don't get the annoying surge you get with standard ICE start/stop vehicles.
