I've searched the GM parts pages, but I have no idea what subsystem this box is related to.

Have you seen any information that would identify this box circled in red? Is it missing a cover?

I think that's the engine control module and bracket with wiring harness.

I'll buy that. The four holes made me wonder if it was missing a cover, but it looks quite similar to a 4.3L GM ECM that runs in my wife's Willys.
