2012 Chevy Volt Lease. 40 K miles. Heater blows cold on battery. Works on gas. Stealership claims "heater coolant heater" is bad and it is 1200 bucks. GM kicked in 600 so 600 out of pocket.

BS or do I pay the 600?

Seriously making me reconsider buying another volt. Just out of 36k warranty and a superfluous part related to the battery breaks and it isn't covered. Me no likey.

Yes there is a heater in the cabin heater loop. The part lists for around $200, I would pull and reinstall the F5 fuse in the drivers door before you pay out the money. Have the car on when you do it. If the heat returns then you need a software update not a new heater. Mine used to do the no heat on electric and pulling the F5 would bring it right back. After they flashed new Firmware mine works like a champ. Check to see if your heat returns then go to another dealer and have the Heater firmware updated.

Worst case $600 is about what they want to charge for the part itself installed.

If you pull the fuse and reinsert and it still doesn't work, fist do a test after the fuse reinsertion turn it up to HI with it blowing on your face, should take a few min. to warm up. If it still doesn't warm up call your Volt Adviser. You can contact them through OnStar from the vehicle, or call (877) 486-5846. Have your VIN handy if you call from a regular phone.

I hope this helps

Yes. You can buy the part online for less than $500 (before shipping) from at least 2 different websites. Make sure you order for the correct model year since the part numbers may change. You should be able to find out the actual part number to be replaced from the dealer, then look it up online and tell them to price match gmpartsdirect.com etc. I haven't needed any non-warranty repair work yet but that's how I plan to manage attempted parts overcharging.

For example:
