Heat No Heat

I live in the upper Mid-West...and we are now experiencing morning temps in the low 40s, and a few times this past week I have run the heat a bit in the evenings too. Each time it worked just fine. My Volt is garaged, but it was still pretty chilly in there this morning when I left for the day at 8 AM. I preconditioned the Volt for about 5 minutes, then headed out. Immediately I noticed NO heat at all, just very cool air blowing from the vents. Climate was set to Auto and temp was set to 80. I drove 15 miles with no heat at all, and I kept adjusting up the heat setting to HI, still cold air. The climate gauge showed 100%, but still no heat at all during the entire trip....about 25 minutes.

When I reached my destination, I parked the car and turned it off for about 5 minutes to drop something off. Came back, turned the car on again and within a minute started getting heat. I immediately drove to my Chevy dealer to get their thoughts. Of course, by the time I arrived there (10 minutes later) the car was HOT inside.

I explained the problem, and the only suggestion the tech had was that the car essentially re-boots each time it starts and for some reason the heating system did not turn on first time. He said it could happen again, or not...it is anybody's guess.

I am wondering if anyone else has experienced this situation? And, if so, what was done to resolve it? thanks

I think the answer is that yes some have experienced this. I think the resolution was a software update. The search on this site in not the best. Try using Google and, after your search terms, type "site: gm-volt.com". That usually works much better.
Place your climate control in AUTO and set a temperature you like. Simple. Yes, the extra energy you use will limit the battery-only range of the vehicle, but that's why you have a range extender in your Volt.

Yes. If it does not work in AUTO then call the Volt Adviser and arrange a visit to the dealer.

Please read my post more closely.... I did all of that, turned it on and off the Auto setting, nothing worked.

Seems like it's PIC5796B released on 9/27/2013. I think it's for 2013 MY Volts.
Always perform two 10 minute pre-conditions / remote starts when it is cold outside while plugged into a 240 Volt charger.
This will warm you car / battery and help to preserve your range. From that point you can usually get by with just the seat warmers, unless it is extremely cold outside.

Doesn't help if its blowing cold air...

The thread really is pretty entertaining. :)

Again, you did not read my post. I VISITED THE DEALER, and talked to the SERVICE TECH. My original post has his reply.

I say again: call the Volt adviser. Unless your post is supposed to be some cryptic message that the dealer solved the problem?

Thanks for the info. I will contact my dealer tomorrow....he made no mention of updates, my guess he is not aware of them.
ballen1923,

Ignore all of the post from others not experiencing this issue, those posts are pointless - apparently it feels good to let others know they do not have your problem. There are, at least 3, other post-threads on this issues, and more will pop-up as temps continue to drop.

The problem is real, and a few have been addressed with program updates (PIC5796A, PIC5796B). Some were fixed temporarily with the updates, and then the problem returns (likely never really fixed), as is my case. Most dealers, like yours, will need to run through the learning curve (several visits), and ultimately end up, per the advise of Chevrolet tier 2 tech service, ordering (currently on back-order due to high demand) the heater control module.

It may help that you offer these details to your dealer's service manager, and/or have your Volt Advisor contact them directly and explain the process - they are independent agents, not true Chevy reps, but can definitely help with details, as they have been through this process numerous times.

Good luck.

Good Morning Ballen1923,

I apologize that your experiencing the intermittent heat. There is a software update for the Electronic Climate Control module if your Volt was built prior to March 11 2013. Please PM me the last 8 of your VIN and the best way for you to be reached. I'll check to see if your Volt is eligible. I would also inform your Dedicated Advisor as to what you experienced.

Thank you,

-Ian Chevrolet EV Customer Service
"Rebooting". Is just part of life with a Volt! One time my radio volume could not be changed. Another time the backup camera stayed active in forward gears. Yet another, the check engine light was on, etc. and yes, I've had the same no heat experience. In EVERY case, the "problem" was not present after the next start. Should it be this way in a $30,000 car? Perhaps not, but it is and it's just part of the experience. I won't believe much of anything is really a problem unless it happens regularly!

Thanks for your reply and information. I will follow your advice and that of a prior commenter and contact the Volt adviser. I agree with you in that what I thought to to be a serious, and easily understood (and clearly explained) problem, elicited such strange replies. Go figure what motives some folks have.
Wish GM was a bit more proactive in addressing these issues rather than waiting for folks to discover them and then play hide and seek with forums, Volt advisers, and dealerships. Why not make them "customer satisfaction programs", which the dealerships would promptly and incorrectly rename to "recalls", and have them done to every affected Volt? It is not like there are no precedents for that.
