I was bummed that we couldn't add safety features easily so I started looking around the net.
I found a company that is testing a camera based control system that will start providing ACC and safety alerts.
I spoke to one of the founders of the startup and they are working on a gen1 volt now but should be able to get this to gen 2 volts at some point, depending on how the wiring is for the gen 2 vs gen 1 cruise.

Is this the kind of thing that interests others?

I found myself asking the question of whether or not audio and visual is good enough or if active control is that much better.
There are others on the market but I Think the price point will be competitive based upon my conversation and it looks like they want to grow capability over time, as the system learns from the driving footage (if I understand correctly).

Most add-ons never interface to the vehicle systems (that is why it is an "add-on", not an "Add-in") and use simple lights and sound signals to warn the driver. I doubt this add-on will interface with the cruise controls of any vehicle and make it "adaptive". It is probaly a beeping sound every time you wander off the lane markers, and will be more of a bother than an assist.

If you are not a engineer or have any technical training, don't buy these add-ons, and instead pay extra to have it factory installled and integrated to the other vehicle systems.

What you described could not be legally sold or marketed as "adaptive cruise control". The jury's still out whether the company linked by OP will finally come to market with ACC versus a simpler warning/assist device.

Do you really want to trust an aftermarket chinese junk ACC with your life?

I see it for headunits and radios, lighting kits etc. but, not for things that can kill you if they don't work.

No. But I might trust a well-vetted aftermarket ACC regardless of country of origin. May I ask how you came to associate the company linked in post #1 with junk status and China as the country of origin?

I think my gen 1 with forward collision alert system already has virtually everything it needs to implement ACC in terms of sensors and controls. FCA is already aware of my following distance. It would mainly need a way to interface that information with the cruise control. The other piece is automatic braking. My car does not fully implement that, but regen braking is already accessible to the cruise control, especially in low gear, and could be increased beyond that level through software settings. It does seem like there is potential there for an aftermarket software tweak to tie it all together. But of course, making it perfectly reliable and overcoming liability issues probably make it too hard.

Looks like that URL is dead, just a few months after this post.

Nexar (https://www.getnexar.com) is sort of a FREE option to help a little with collision avoidance but absolutely not ACC.

MobileEye, which is the OEM for some in car systems, makes an aftermarket system that some people really like. Including installation, they seem to run 1000 to 1500 USD, and often cannot actually do all the ACC features.

Eventually I hope this stuff is mandatory on cars -- a safety feature few questions, like seat belts -- but I suspect we won't see that kind of legislation in the US for at least five years.

There have been some aftermarket "ACC" kits out there but they can only back off the throttle and does not apply the brakes...

Since the OP is asking about wiring and cruise control, I would appear that this would somehow be an ACC device vs an alert device...

If the company comes out with something and its a halfway descent product the company will most likely become acquired (GM paid ONE BILLION for Cruise Automation)...
