Has anyone found any aftermarket body trim panels that replace the cheap grey plastic along the bottom exterior of the gen1?

I like how the car looks except for those plastic bits. I'm usually not a body kit type of guy, but I think it would look a lot more sophisticated if they were shiny and painted the same color as the rest of the car.

I don't want them to be a different shape than the grey parts, just a different finish.

Just get them painted, or try plastidipping them yourself. Some people have even used vinyl wrap.

Don't they have a rough texture to them? I feel like body panels are normally smooth and that would change how paint looks on them.
No, no texture. They are pretty smooth. A coat of paint and clear coat would make it really smooth. But I'm planning to plastidip mine, that way if I don't like it, the plastidip will peel right off.
