Remember that the Clarity PHEV has a very powerful electric motor, so they are allowing even faster acceleration than EV only by allowing ICE plus EV, final version of ELR allows this too.
This is why they say the PHEV version is significantly faster than either the hydrogen or BEV version (1.2 seconds faster to 60 on page 2).
This is a feature in my book. I wish the Volt 1 offered the ability to run ICE in sport mode for added torque. The issue I have with many hybrids is they have small electric motors, so really have to operate that way.
