GM Free Maintenance for MY 2104

GM announced it will expand its free scheduled maintenance program to most 2014 Chevrolet, Buick and GMC vehicles in the U.S. The program for most 2014 model year Chevrolet, Buick and GMC vehicles covers routine oil changes, tire rotation and other basic maintenance, Jim Cain, a GM spokesman, said. GM already offers a four-year or 50,000 mile free maintenance program for Cadillac.

Shares of the Detroit-based company rose 1.1 percent to $34.40 as at 9:43 a.m. New York time. GM gained 18 percent this year through yesterday, compared with a 13 percent advance for the Standard & Poor’s 500 Index.

Optimism about GM is growing as the U.S. Treasury sells down its stake and the stock on May 17 topped the $33 a share initial public offering price for the first time in two years.

I wonder what "other basic maintenance" refers to and if this will apply to 2014 Volts?

The maintenance for my Volt over two years has been one oil change. I do my own tire rotations. I'll need another oil change within the next two years. What else is there?

"Other basic maintenance" is probably the 27 point inspection, top off fluids, adjust tire pressures, lube, etc.....that come standard on regular maintenance visits.

I just got my tires rotated (for free) by the dealership. That's all I've had done to my Volt so far in 8 months. I actually received 2 sets of free oil change coupons, but because my oil life is still at 86%, I ended up not using them before they expired. But the service rep said I can still get a free oil change next time it is due. Might get it changed at the 1 year mark, just because.

2104 Volts won't need any maintenance. They will be self-driving and will accumulate charge from the air

I think this is a great move for GM and will help them sell more cars overall. It is even more beneficial for the Volt as it should help ease anxiety people might have over the "new technology" without costing GM much if anything in covered maintenance.

I have had my Volt for over 18 months and so far the only maintenance I have had done is rotation of the tires three times.

Wiper blades? Here in Texas, if you car sits out in the parking lot in the hot sun, wiper blades tend to go bad pretty quickly.

My dealer gave me free maintenance when I leased my Volt. Sounds pretty good until you realize that amounts to rotating tires a few times and changing the oil once over the three year lease.

Amazingly after 25 months (and two winters), I'm still on my OEM wiper blades and they work as well as day 1.

I'm wondering if it's a combination of me washing the car (and blades) weekly, cleaning the windows to a spotless condition, and then applying a light coat of Turtle Wax ICE wax? Certainly dust and dirt on the glass will act a bit like sandpaper over time and wear the rubber blades. Plus, the light coat of wax may be acting as a bit of a lubricant as well as eliminating the need for some wiper use. I've had cars in the past where I was replacing blades once a year, but my Volt blades have been awesome.

I find that keeping the windshield clean and cleaning the wiper blades with a wet cloth periodically greatly extends the life of any wiper blades. It's the dirt and grit that kills them quickly.
