According to the article, Chevy opened a Cruze plant in Mexico and at the same time, shut down one shift at a Cruze plant in Michigan.

That is what Trump said he wants to stop.
I was just browsing a dealer lot on Sunday while my car was charging, I guess that's my "window shopping" looking at cars and their window stickers.

I noticed that all of the 2017 Cruze sedans are made in Lordstown OH but all of the new hatchbacks were made in Mexico at a plant that opened in 1981 and started off making that sweet ride known as the Chevy Citation.

He may want to stop it but despite what he believes or thinks we do not live isolated from the rest of the world. What would hindered countries like japan, or germany from imposing tariffs and tax restrictions on their auto companies from opening up assembling plants in this country in retaliation. We have Nissan and VW to name just a few have assembling plants here in this country. If we start a war on tariffs and fines we will trigger a world wide assault. Do we want to live through another great recession or depression which in the case of the depression was triggered in part by protectionist policies. And should any of the Trump policies work towards implementation the unintended consequences will be a wholesale loss of much of our manufacturing base before they can be implemented. You don't get something for nothing.

Seriously, what's next? Trying to force Apple to manufacture all iPhones in the US?

I think this is another symptom that our economy is still sputtering along and not running on all cylinders (using an auto metaphor). Speaking from personal experience I was all set to retire last year and after crunching the numbers with my wife and financial advisor I came to the conclusion I needed to keep working. The sad downside to this decision is that my company had already lined up several up and coming engineers they wanted to promote up into my position and that is on hold.

Contrary to all the media BS the average American is not better off than they were 8 years ago. The auto industry reflects the economy.

No real surprise in this. Low gas prices equal more pickups and SUV sales. Time to raise gas taxes!

Yes, very interesting time for this... I wonder how many of them voted for the donald...
Ohio and Michigan....both went red. I guess his message resonated in those 2 states.

People are "voting" for pickup trucks and SUVs because of cheap gas. GM is reacting to the will of the people?

Being Canadian, I got a little concerned about Trump's idea to trash NAFTA, I remember clearly how our Prime Minister of the day Brian Mulroney and Ronald Regan took over a year and a half to hash out all the details and dotting the i's and crossing the t's to finally come up with the Free Trade agreement, at the time our dollar was .62 cents US and our minimum wage was $7.50 Canadian dollars to US's minimum wage of aprox $5.50 US.
Take a good look at the Mexican Pesos $.05 a US dollar and the Chinese Junk money at ... I forget, but their minimum wages today are $0.50 US an hour for Mex and $0.78 US an hour for the Chinese. Tell me there's nothing enticing US companies to do business in these countries'?

Lets be frank,
The economy did not improve in a meaningfull way since 1999, like Japan we are having our LOST DECADEs

Most of the folks who graduated as engineers with me didn't get work in their field and that was during a so called boom in the Bush years.

GM lays off 2,000....and Tesla buys a company specializing in automating production lines. Hmmm......I wonder if there is any relationship between one and the other.

I am afraid this trend is immune to political solutions. Unfortunately, that won't stop politicians from making unrealistic promises and voters from getting sucked in. Stupidity ruled the day, and the split between the haves and havenots gets wider.
