Germans charge fmr VW CEO Winterkorn with fraud

VW was caught using illegal engine control software to cheat U.S. pollution tests in 2015, triggering a global backlash against diesel that and has so far cost it $32.8 billion.

This guy headed up the teams of people doing the fraud. The US has also charged him and VW for SEC financial fraud, EPA violations. Now the Germans are going after him. Four other executives are being charged, the prosecutors office said in a statement, without giving their names.

After it became clear on May 25, 2014, that diesel engines had been manipulated, he neglected to inform authorities in Europe and the United States as well as customers of the illegal software and he also did not prevent the continued installation of such software, the prosecutors said.

To be clear, there were many people actively engaged in this cheat, and management knew but did nothing, allowing it to continue. This was not one guy going rogue that no one else knew about.

It was was either tacit or direct approval by him to continue... And in either case it falls under the knew or should have known clauses of those crimes... You can't claim ignorance. The top person gets all the glory when they do really well and all the blame when they fail. It's why CEOs get the big bucks (or at least why they argue that they should get them).

Hopefully the world can get justice and put this behind us and move forward.
