On our 2012 Volt I kept OnStar for a while - and actually used it three times. The first time was when I accidentally locked myself out of the car but had my cellphone at hand. The second time was for navigation, to impress a passenger (though my phone and the car's GPS could have done the job). The third time was on a visit to a friend in the desert - as we talked about driving away I recalled that with OnStar I could remotely "start" my Volt so the interior would be comfortable when we got to the car. That worked perfectly. So, I paid only $100 or so for each usage of OnStar...

Our 2017 Premier is a major step forward, with better range, nicer ride, and a more luxurious interior. However, I did not extend OnStar beyond the trial period.

Another of our cars can be remotely started by pressing and holding one of the remote buttons.

Is there some way to remotely "start" the car without OnStar? I note that the remote works (beep!) from as much as 200' distance, which would be fine.

Thanks, gurus.

Please read your Owner's Manual, see pages 35-36 of the 2017 Volt Owner's Manual.

There's an Owner's Manual? I thought it was designed to be intuitive, like an Android phone...

Yea, yea, yea...."read the manual". I'll spare you the grief... Click the lock button and then hold down the Start button (the circle arrow) for 4 seconds. Viola! AC or Heater kicks in...you can thank me later

the mychevrolet app has the keyfob functions for free for 5 years even though the full OnStar subscription expires after 30 or 90 days. You have to tell them you need that activiated.
