I notice that the Gen 2 Volts make a point of having side mirrors that fold in for going through a mechanical car wash. This suggests that there may have been problems with the rigid side mirrors on Gen 1 Volts when they are put through such a car wash.

Has anyone had experience, positive or negative, in putting a Gen 1 Volt through a mechanical car wash? Can the side mirrors be damaged?

I learned that the hard way while backing out of my garage after month of ownership. Luckily, the mirror articulated, the mirror itself popped off, but I popped it back on. The garage trim sadly didn't survive the hit.

Just last week I was parked on a busy city street. While on the front porch visiting my son, a car clipped my mirror, tore off his (or her) mirror, and my mirror articulated forward and the actual mirror on the driver side popped out. I was able to pop it back in plus reattach the two wires, presumably mirror heater wires. Safly, the owner of the other car paused, then took off while I watched him. Curses for the lack of a terminator-like cyborg camera in my head... it happened so fast I couldn't ID the car nor see the license plate. Maybe it's time to get a dashcam.

My '13 Volt, '14 ELR and '10 RAM all have folding mirrors. The counter-rotating brushes usually fold them all back out.

Thanks for the advice. I had not realized the the side mirrors on my 2015 Volt will actually fold in (somewhat). I've had it for 12 weeks, and I just ran it through the "tunnel" at Brown Bear Car Wash on Lake City Way in Seattle with good results. I folded the mirrors in before the wash, but my impression is that it would have been OK to leave them out.

I would never put any car through an automated car wash, especially ones with those flying spinning towels to wipe your car. All it takes is a guy before you off-roading and muddling to get sand into those towels and really scratch up a number on your car. A hose, bucket, wash kit, terry cloth, and microfiber towels are all I need. And if I'm in a hurry, I pull out the power washer.

Can someone tell me if a 2015 Gen 1 side mirrors still fold. The owner's manual says they do, a call to Chevy says they do, but the dealer where mine is in for service insists that they do not. My 2012's side mirrors folded, and I could swear one time my 2015s did too, but they seem locked in place now.

jcramer's post claims that they do on his 2015. I didn't know mine folded until I hit the trim of my garage door opening, and popped the mirror and trim piece off.

I don't see any reason for GM to change the design. Yours might just be really tight.

If they did once, I am sure they "still" do. I am sure they are just stuck. Especially if they have never or rarely been pivoted.

Thanks. On 2-17 of the 2015 owner's manual it says they move. A call to Chevy confirmed they are suppose to move. Dealer has spent 2 days trying to figure it out and claim they don't move, so before I hit the eject button with this dealer, just wanted to try to confirm that they do in fact move.

In the 2013 owners manual it even talks about the icon on the mirror switch which allows you to retract the mirrors - alas, I don't think anybody in North America received motorized mirrors. My volt is jealous of Teslas retractable mirrors.
