Hello everybody, as I promised in previous posts I am now posting a guide on how to add a factory navigation system if your car didn’t come equipped with it.

Big thanks go to cmturn0 on here for answering all my questions prior to doing this, and to Carlo from AAAforeignauto for the Ridicilously Cheap OEM radio !

It would be great if the mods would sticky this :)

You will need the following parts to perform the swap:

* OEM Navigation Radio Part # 22857154
* Navigation Center Stack Either Black or White
* GPS Antenna Splitter Part # 20960972
* Red Splitter To OnStar Module Part # 20971947
* Blue Splitter To Nav Radio Part # 20971946
* You Can Substitute The Splitter & Cables By Getting An Aftermarket GPS Adapter " Details Below "

You will need the following tools to perform the swap:

* 7MM Socket and Extension for ease of use.

Step 1:

Remove the trim piece around the shifter, you don’t need any special tools for that, you can use both hands, and pull the trim up gently from the inside, don’t lift up more than 6 inches.

Step 2:

Unplug the cable to the shifter light indicator, you can do that with your hand gently.

Step 3:

Remove the two bolts ( marked in red in the picture below ) to loosen the center stack.

Step 4:

Pull the center stack slowly and gently, during this process you will unplug all the connectors to the center stack and screen, please note that the only thing holding the stack down is the two bolts removed in the previous step.

Step 5 (Optional):

If your Navigation Stack didn’t come with a screen just remove the one from your center stack and install it in yours by removing the four bolts.

Step 6:

Remove your radio by removing the four bolts holding it down, pull it out gently and unplug all the cables from the back of it.

Step 7:

This is the GPS Antenna Step, if you went with a standalone Antenna like I did you can route it from your radio and hide the antenna under the roof next to the rear view mirror like I did, If you went with a OEM setup you can just install the Splitter and you are all set. I highly recommend going with the OEM Antenna over aftermarket though for ease of wiring

Big Thanks To focher For Making The Walkthrough Listed Below To Wire The OEM Antenna Splitter & Cables

Step 8:

Install the new radio and plug all the connectors up, everything is color and size coded “ Please note if that the 20pin connector on my radio was different than the cable’s plug but that is no issue, it will fit fine in that place only and work properly. Now reverse your installation and install everything back up.

Step 9:

Go to the dealership and have them reprogram your car to work with the new navigation system and you are all set. Please note if you are going to be installing a rear view camera like I did, make sure they include that option in the reprogramming process. Once completed everything will work as if it came from factory as below :)

Complete Plug & Play Package:

Carlo from AAAforeignauto is currently working on a full package that includes all the parts, he currently has all the parts needed and he is working on sorting the whole thing together that way you buy everything at once.

Navigation Radio:

AAAforeignauto on EBay is selling the radio for a cheap price, the units are new and that’s the one I got.

GPS Antenna:

Navigation Centerstack:

Ebay, Local Junkyard, Dealer, Online GM Dealers

Here is a list of the Frequently Asked Questions that might come to your mind so I’ll answer it to the best of my abilities :

* Which Navigation Stack do I need to buy and where?

You can buy it on eBay or a local junkyard, please note that the Center stacks from the 2011 Volt will work perfectly fine, the differences are a little bit cosmetic but not major. If you have heated seats make sure you get that, if not get one that doesn't have it. It doesn't matter if it is black or white, they will both work, the only difference is the color

* Do I need a Factory Bose System for this to work ?

No, you don’t a Bose System to work, this unit will work with either the Bose System or without, the sound quality is a little bit better with this unit over the Non-Navigation radio.

* Which Antenna should I go with ?

I am using an aftermarket one, but I am still testing it to make sure it’s working perfectly, for the time being please purchase an oem setup (It will be a splitter and cable, I will post that information later as I don't have it handy)

* Is there any other advantages of doing this ?

It seems that the navigation radio runs much better and smoother, especially the graphics, and makes the car feel more valuable :)

* Will everything work after I do the swap ?

Yes, everything will be the same, Bluetooth, OnStar, Aux, USB Turn-By-Turn " Which is a standalone program and doesn't interact directly with the Navigation Radio, etc...

* Reprogramming - Did you have any issue with the dealer fulfilling your request to reprogram the system? How much did they charge you? What did they use ?

The dealer service people were giving me a lecture how it's not possible, you know the usual thing " if it didn't come from factory it is not possible, I don't blame them, that's what GM tells them, but the actual tech knew what he was doing, he got it done in 10 min. My dealer has a minimum charge of 1 hour no matter how long it takes, I paid $105 for 1 hour labor. They use the MDI tool to reprogram the car for the radio.

* Does the Navigation unit need its own screen that goes on the Center Stack?

Nope, not at all it is the same screen, they are interchangeable, its the radio that makes the difference.

* I have a rear view camera from factory and parking assist. Will it work fine after the install?

It will work just fine, just make sure you inform the technician reprogramming your car that you would like these functions to stay active.

* My Car has MyLink, it's a late 2012 or 2013, will this work ?

I am not a 100 % sure if it will work, I am currently researching the issue and will update once I get the answer or somebody who has done it replies here.

* I have an extra plug on the back of the radio that isn't being used, I can't find a cable to plug it into. Will this be an issue ?

The radio will work just fine, that plug is used for a different function, I am not sure what it's used for yet as I don't have the pin-outs and schematics for this radio. I will update when I get the information.

* Why not use the original stack? Seems like if it would work we could just use on screen navigation instead of buying a new stack.

With the original stack 80% of the buttons wont work and the ones that do wont do what they are supposed to do, you can't even switch to NAV with that one, the NAV unit doesn't have a main menu with Big icons like the standard one that take you to different functions so to speak, You will need the Navigation Stack and you will need to reprogram otherwise the buttons wont work and the sound quality will be horrible and it wont communicate properly with your car.

That is all for now folks, if you have any questions please ask, meanwhile I will be making a how to for rear view camera addition, I already did it and it works perfectly on my 2012 Volt and is very simple :)

Thanks for the post. I am seriously considering taking this step, as I inadvertently missed the lack of the navigation option when I placed my early 2012 Volt order. Some questions:

1. I assume the white and black dash covers are the same except the color. I have the white trim, but find the center console to be a bit too much for my taste, so would like to switch over to black.

2. GPS antenna - any reason to need a second antenna? Isn't the built in antenna satisfactory? I assume that the splitter is what allows the use of the existing GPS antenna.

3. Turn-by-Turn - Does this have any affect on the existing built-in turn-by-turn functionality? Does it integrate or is it completely separate? For example, if I use OnStar to send instructions, does it display on the Nav unit now? Or both?

4. Reprogramming - Did you have any issue with the dealer fulfilling your request to reprogram the system? How much did they charge you?

5. Screen - It appears you used the existing screen, so the Navigation option doesn't use a different one?

6. Rear Camera - I have this built in. Any impact or will it work fine after the install?

Appreciate your replies.

So your car is a 2012 without MyLink, and you used a 2012 Nav radio? Just wanted you to clarify for future readers - we've been told that MyLink isn't compatible with the 2011/2 Nav system - something they changed in the Bluetooth/OnStar systems, but no details. (Which would mean that a 2013 user couldn't do this - at least with that radio.)

I do know the 2013s (which all have MyLink) have a different Nav system which doesn't have the hard drive but includes some new things (Eco routing, for one.) No idea if that can go in to a 2011/2 car or not - so much that we don't know about the architecture.

Did the dealer charge you for the module programming? Any idea exactly what they did? (I assume it requires an MDI to do on a Volt...)

You are correct the color is the only difference

2. GPS antenna - any reason to need a second antenna? Isn't the built in antenna satisfactory? I assume that the splitter is what allows the use of the existing GPS antenna.

I was personally testing an aftermarket antenna, the OEM one " Splitter " will suffice and there are no extra features that the aftermarket one will provide. As far as I can tell it might not be communicating properly so I will be going with the OEM splitter my self

3. Turn-by-Turn - Does this have any affect on the existing built-in turn-by-turn functionality? Does it integrate or is it completely separate? For example, if I use OnStar to send instructions, does it display on the Nav unit now? Or both?

Turn by Turn is its separate application, I tried it and it doesn't integrate with my Navigation unit on my car but it still works properly, the OnStar Remote App still works, Please note that if you have XM Radio you will have to update your XM radio ID with them " It is listed on top of the radio "

4. Reprogramming - Did you have any issue with the dealer fulfilling your request to reprogram the system? How much did they charge you?

It will work just fine and if you have the rear and front parking assist that will work too.

Appreciate your replies.

My car is a early 2012 and didn't have MyLink, and honestly I have no experience with MyLink so I wouldn't be able to tell for sure if it's compatible or not, but you never as nobody that I know has tried it yet because if it doesn't work its a big waste of money

Did the dealer charge you for the module programming? Any idea exactly what they did? (I assume it requires an MDI to do on a Volt...)

Correct, they used MDI to reprogram it, they charged me an hour of labor, and all the dealerships around have a hourly rate of about $100

Good job and writeup! Wonder if this works on a 2013?
Wow, thank you so much for taking the plunge on this. I have been itching to try myself but didn't want to end up with a 350 dollar brick :p Couple of questions if you don't mind:

Did you have the bose system? There is an extra connector on the navi radio and "bus" behind the radio that I don't have a cable for. Is that what it's for?

Did you try using the original stack? Seems like if it would work we could just use on screen navigation instead of buying a new stack.

Thanks!

Honestly I am not sure as the Navigation system has a different part number in the 2013's, I think they have changed some of the system's components in the 2013, but I have yet to confirm if this will work or not.

Not at all, I actually got a standard system with no Bose, you just leave that extra connector alone, by the way both connectors on the back of the radio look alike but 20 pin connector will fit in one only eventhough the color doesnt match. I am not sure if that extra plug is for the Bose system or something else " Maybe parking assist " I dont have the schematics and pinouts for the different units.

Hi great write up, question i have with the new nav stack it has hdd and other buttons on it, will the new nav radio have any other features other than nav or will these now be dummy buttons, that would really bother me.

Thank you very much ! The radio has the HDD built in, everything on the Center Stack will work, every button, once you install them it will be like you got the full Navigation Package installed from factory !
Excellent write up! Glad I could be of some assistance. Good thinking on the extra GPS antenna BTW, can't believe I didn't think of that! The Signal splitter setup like is used OEM is obviously cleaner, but its a real PITA running the cables under the dash in this car. Plus I ordered every cable in the parts diagram and none of them were the correct length/ connector type. I ended up having to buy some generic FAKRA cables and connector ends on eBay and just made up a set of cables that were correct from the parts...

I've been looking at the MyLink radio setup a lot lately and believe I found a Radio that should. I'm considering picking it up and trying a MyLink swap next just to see if it can be done. It may require a different On-Star module, but I am going to try it with the existing one first. If it works I'll do a write-up on it.

Here is how the OEM GPS/GSM cable splitter is set up. The OnStar module and mount for the signal splitter is under the dash above your left foot if you in the driver seat.

Here are some diagrams that may help with locating the OnStar Module and installing the splitter.

This is probably the best picture of where the OnStar Module is and how to get at it. However the picture is mirrored, this is for a RHD car I believe. The module is under the drivers side dash as mentioned earlier.

This is another diagram I found that shows some of the wiring.

I contacted AAA (ebay seller) today and apparently the "stacks" are kind of stuck in some warehouse right now. He told me to give him a call next week to see if they are in. I'm not sure what the pricing is going to be but worst case the stack is 208 dollars from gmpartsdirect dot com.

This is going to be real nice when he gets it all together. Also, I'm going to call around to a few dealers to see if they will do the programming for less than 100 dollars...that seems a little steep.
Spectacular post of a great mod. Well done! Its nice to see that the Volt is upgradable.

The total part and labor cost for adding retrofitting the nav $450. The factory price is $895 and requires another $500 for the Bose. Still, even $450 is a lot more than a free smartphone apps (e.g. waze), or even an iPad mini to run them on. Thanks to the internet connectivity the navigation apps are a lot better in every aspect but one. And that is that our Volt does not have a good place to mount a smartphone, as the prime real estate is taken by a huge shifter.
awesome MOD thread!!! I love to see people not being afraid to MOD these cars!! props to the OP!!

WopOnTour actually clarified the reason for this and my local dealer confirmed. In the pre-MyLink 2012 model, the Bluetooth support is built into the OnStar module. The change in the 2012 MyLink configuration is that the Bluetooth was moved to the radio head unit.
Would love to add a Nav with MyLink to my 2012.
I know that this was not an option until the 2013 Nav came out.

Does anyone know if a 2013 Nav/Radio with MyLink might work with a 2012 Volt?
there are actually 3 cables that come out of the antenna base. Most of the pictures make is seem like one or two.

I am not sure which ones need a splitter.
If any one can shed some light on what the part numbers are for the splitter and cable that would be great. I'm about to just order the antenna because I can't seem to find these parts. The splitter is part number 10 in the bottom 2 diagrams correct? I didn't see any connectors that looks like antenna connectors under the drivers dash :(
Hey guys,

sorry I have been super busy with work and life in general that I haven't been on here that much but I am back now, I'll go through the new posts and try to answer all the questions, but for now the splitter part number is : 20960972 and it has three cables that connect to it, one from the original antenna cable , one that goes to the nav and one that goes to the onstar module.

I personally haven't had time to install mine yet, but when I do I will take pics and update the thread, if anybody has done it, please feel free to post the info in as well.

Thanks a lot :)
I just completed the switch myself, but have not yet connected the GPS antenna. Some more details:

- Paid roughly 130 dollars for the programming :( . The dealer kept getting an error until they called GM tech and were informed on a different way of doing the programming.
- As noted, there are many subtle (nice) differences between the NAV system vs standard. One feature I'm very happy about is the guidelines now show up on the rearview camera!
- I have XM radio now; probably a trail subscription as would come with a new car however the dealer did not mention this...just noticed it was working after driving home.
- You can use the radio without programming but it's difficult to figure out which button does what (they do not match their function). After programming the buttons will match...did not try this with the original stack before programming though.

I will order that part, but I think I will also need a cable? Will update this thread with whatever I come accross.
