I just had a realization the other day about gas prices that made me giggle. In my own cost-benefit analyses, I had been calculating my average cost per ICE mile at about 8 cents US for my 2013 Volt, but because one of the grocery stores I shop at has gas stations and fuel rewards that don't expire, and I go months between top-ups (I try to keep between 1 and 4 gallons of gas in the car at a time) I'm getting my gas about $1.20 cheaper per gallon than everyone else on the rare occasion when I need to add some to the tank. Take that, big oil! lol

What grocery stores give fuel rewards?

My Volt works out to:

6 cents per ICE mile
2 cents per EV mile

Kroger/Fred Meyer and Carrs / Safeway by me have fuel rewards points. I typically get $1 off per gallon, which is our max and I make sure I take advantage of every gallon I can get at that reduced rate. Especially since regular fuel is around $2.65 a gal. right now.

Wow, gas points that don't expire? You're lucky! I usually shop at HyVee and those points expire after 30 days. When I drove my old Impala, I would always try to get as many fuel saver points as possible. Now I don't even bother since I rarely fill up. The only other grocery store nearby that has gas discounts have to be used the same day.

Just don't think you're not paying for that cheaper gas with slightly higher grocery prices. Nothing is free.

I use my fuel points on the RV. No sense waisting them on the Volt. It doesn't use enough gas to make a big impact.

Only the tip of the iceburg...Use giftcard granny which searches all the major discount gift card sites, find a Kroger/Ralphs/Vons/Safeway/Costco/etc gift card at 1%-5% off, use a cash back site like befrugal.com to get another 1%-10% off...

My version of a "fun realization about gas prices" is discovering that I have no idea what current gas prices are because I last fueled up on January 2. :D

I don't waste my Fred Meyer (Kroger) fuel rewards on my Volt either. I take my Ford Escape Hybrid and three 5 gallon gas cans to max out the 30 gallon limit. I usually have a $1 discount per gallon each month, especially after doing the surveys at the bottom of the receipt.

In Canada, SOBEY'S grocery stores often have a revolving cross-promotion with a specific gas chain (They've done this over the years with SHELL, PETROCANADA, and CANADIAN-TIRE Gas Bars), usually 2% or so of Grocery Spend in discounts at the gas bar. I can see how this would add up when only putting in 1 or 2 tanks of gas per year.

Gas?, What's gas? I'm still on the dealers fill up from when I leased the Volt on 12/9/16. It looks like I will need to refuel by mid April. I can use my Kroger/Ralphs fuel points at any Shell station.
