So I’m in my 2017 going through various settings, specifically......

Settings -> Vehicle -> Collision/Detection Systems ->

I look at the first item (Forward Collision System) settings, then use the back arrow to get back to the list. I quickly jab the second item in the list and read that it’s for “Forward Pedestrian Detection”, and all the choices are grayed out. I hit the back arrow again and I see the 2nd item is now labeled as Rear Cross Traffic Alert. Wait, what? It changed names and I can’t make the other pedestrian detection option come back so I can’t reproduce it!

Anyone come across this? Is there a safety feature specifically for pedestrians? I think some other manufacturers have that. Maybe GM wanted that but couldn’t get it to work?

I do have the #1 & #2 packages and ACC

Well that’s interesting that you came across that titling of an option in the menu system. Rear cross traffic alert WILL alert you to pedestrians coming from either side of the rear of the vehicle when you are in reverse. The rear camera view comes on the display and you will get an audible alert, along with an arrow from the direction the pedestrian (or another vehicle, dog, etc.) is coming from.

So it will detect pedestrians (not sure why the word “Forward” is used), I’ve seen that work in action a few times.

Forward Pedestrian Detection may be a planned safety feature, not yet implemented, at least not in the US market.
