Ford to move planned electric car production to Mexico from Michigan

Dec. 6, 2017 10:55 PM ET|About: Ford Motor Company (F)|By: Carl Surran, SA News Editor
Ford (NYSE:F) plans to produce a future electric car in Mexico rather than in the U.S., reversing its January announcement that the Flat Rock, Mich., assembly plant would serve as its main electric vehicle production site, WSJ reports.

Ford plans instead to convert the suburban Detroit factory into a manufacturing hub for future driverless vehicles, hiking its anticipated investment in the plant to $900M from $700M foreseen previously.

Redirecting electric vehicle production to Mexico is about more than cutting costs, Ford President of Global Markets Jim Farley tells WSJ, as the move will make room for the Flat Rock factory to serve as Ford’s “center of excellence” for autonomous vehicles.

Trump and the GOP's corporate tax cuts cannot stop the outsourcing of US Companies' manufacturing jobs abroad US as Trump himself hires cheap unvetted foreign workers, to freely work on Trump enterprises in the US.

Might be fall out from the uncertainty about NAFTA. So many parts come from Mexico that it's hard to make a business case for assembling vehicles in the US.
