My guess is that no changes to the drivetrain or battery were done.. they have just figured out a way to game the testing criteria to get a higher MPGe, and thus more range.

As the only domestic plug-in hybrid 5-seat sedan (and a weight over 3,900 pounds), the Fusion Energi is doing well. But it is frustrating that Ford has not announced any real EV breakthrough for the 2017 model year. The Fusion needs a total redesign to place the battery pack under the floor (or behind the rear seat as the 2017 Cadillac CT6 Hybrid will have), and increase the electric motors HP from 140 to 200. Then it can compete with all the other plug-in hybrids and most other EV sedans. The first problem is that the Fusion Energi is basically expensive, a redesign will cost over $40,000, and probably put it out of many customer's reach. We have to expect Ford to reveal what they plan to offer for 2018.

I am interested in the Energi, as the Fusion Hybrid, C-Max Hybrid and MKZ Hybrid are the ONLY domestic EVs sold here in Puerto Rico, until GM changes its mind and allows local dealers to sell and service the Volt and Bolt EV.
