So there has been a lot of consternation here about how the HVAC system works (or doesn't depending on your perspective). I have a question about the fan. If you hit the off button, the system goes into "fan only" mode. Then if I want the fan to blow harder I try to turn up the fan speed. But every time I touch the fan dial, it turns the system back on to its previous setting (eco/max/etc.) How do you get more fan to blow on you without conditioning?

I think you should just be able to press whichever mode is lit (be it Eco or Max) and it'll switch into fan-only.

If the power button is off, everything shuts down completely. If the power button is on, only the fan will work with no heating or cooling. If you turn on eco, then the heating and cooling work at low level. Max button and it works at high power. One exception, if you turn on the max front defroster, it is the same as the regular max button (it seems to me).

So for battery savings in the cold, I turn the fan off, because it stays a little warmer than having it on and blowing cold air. Until the windows fog, then all bets are off.

Fan-only with adjustable speed works only with auto completely off and eco and max off. The system is not particularly easy to figure out, the manual is among the worst for clarity that I've ever seen, and I discovered this by trial and error while driving in cool weather with a sun-drenched dashboard. Other challenges: operating cruise control (infrequently) with two off buttons, one really off and the other only temporarily off...... Hey, I am old, but reviewing the manual, bad as it is, after driving the car ('16) for a year or two is helpful.

Glad to hear I am not the only one that thinks the manual is unclear when it comes to descibing how the A/C system works. And yes, the more I play with it the more I learn. I do love the car though :)........
