GM is doing rather poor PR job these days as far as the Volt is concerned. After creating a sensation by showing the sleek mockup at auto shows, comments or rumors coming out of GM recently are:
“ Price might be higher than $40K…”
“ Production quantity will be rather limited…”
“ Styling will be much different from the show sample…”
“ Range extender ICE will be larger and heavier…”
They are turning off the people once so excited.
Instead, I think GM should launch the second wave of offensive by announcing something like:
“ We are so happy with the results of the mule tests of the A123 technology that we are setting up a joint venture company committing $$$$ for soonest large scale production of the cells.”
“ We are reviving the EV-1 modernized with the A123 cells and the latest control and drive technology at a price much cheaper than the Volt. And for those who are nervous about the 40-50 mile range, we are packaging it with a 4kW/240V portable gas generator that meets the most stringent clean air regulations. It will fill up the battery pack in two hours or less.”
Am I dreaming? Let’s see the reality. Already we know of the joint financial commitments between Toyota and Panasonic, Nissan and NEC, Mitsubishi and GS/Yuasa and between VW and Sanyo. Meanwhile GM is still hedging the risk by talking to LG. You cannot lead the high-tech industry with a tentative attitude.
