F*** NY State on Bolt EV rebate!

Okay, so after much waiting , Bolts are finally starting to trickle... and I do mean trickle (like one Bolt at just two dealerships in a county with 1.5million people) in to the area.

Got to drive a Orange Premier yesterday... it was as good as I envisioned.
In my best Trump'ish tweet tone... "fantastic car...want one!"

Here's the rub.....

NY State is only starting their $2000 EV rebate for EV's purchased on or after April 1st 2017.
So even if the dealers get the Bolts on the lot... no one in NY will buy one till April 1st due to procrastination up in Albany since they okay'd the $2000 EV Rebate program in last April (2016).

So we finally get Bolts in NY... physically available to purchase and literally drive home today... but they will sit unsold till April 1st.

FWIW- no discounts either... 100% sticker price! :(

How's that for a kick in the produce section.....

Rob, Have you contacted NYSERDA? Here is an email they sent me on 3/2/17." New York State’s electric car rebate for consumers is expected to launch by April 1, 2017. Only cars that are purchased after the program is launched will be eligible for the rebate. We'll have more details available on nyserda.ny.gov when the program goes live." This is what they told me in Feb. "I see that you emailed the Governor’s office about whether buying an EV in February would qualify for the upcoming rebate. The email got passed back to me to reply to (sorry!) so I figured I’d just email you back directly.

The program is not going to be retroactive – purchases will only be eligible for the rebate if they’re made after the program starts. I wish I had a firmer date for the launch, but by law it has to be by April 1 so it’ll be sometime between now and then." If a dealer told you anything about how it is going to work either they a well informed or making it up. NYSERDA is holding the information cards close to the vest. There is a good chance it will launch in the last few days of March as it is required by the budget bill ( my opinion). The local dealers don't even know the rebate exists... and this is Albany. The NYS budget runs April 1 thru March 31 this is why they have to get the program running in this 2016-2017 budget year.

^ thanks for that!

I have sent an email to NYSERDA asking for clarity.

Your post pretty much confirms what the "other" Chevy rep told me....

1) It's a $2K instant rebate off the price of the car.
2) It only becomes effective on 4/1/2017 and only cars purchased on or after April 1st 2017 will be eligible for the rebate.
3) Anyone who purchases a Bolt before 4/1/2017 will not receive the $2K rebate.

He also told me:
- he learned this info from a Bolt class he took last week.
- The Volt will be eligible for $1750 (IIRC) rebate.
Keep us posted. I am shopping for a new Volt since there is 0% this month.

There is an AP story on Green Car Reports 3/6/17 that has some info... http://www.greencarreports.com/news...ctric-car-rebate-program-to-launch-this-month.
So is it clear that this Instant Rebate from NYS can only be used for Purchase and Not Lease?
it is far too early to determine if the rebate will be instant at the dealership. I bought 3 Gen 1 Volts from the largest Albany area dealer and they asked me if I heard anything when I went shopping for a Gen 2. I cant believe that they would be given the tools and forms to do the deal on April 1 without any prior vetting or training in the program. But you never know. Time will tell.
Don't let the 0% fool you. If you can haggle for your best deal and get 0%, then great. but when I got the deal of the decade, they wouldn't give me 0% without taking away one of the rebates, which made the deal worse. And I have aaer perfect credit score. It's usually a gimmick to get you in and pay too much for the car.
The discussion about value of the trade, rebate and finance always come after what the price of the car is. Always! At this time there is no reduction of rebate for the 0%. The free money is in fact free.
I got an email reply back from NYSERDA regarding the NY $2000 EV Rebate program:

Thank you for your inquiry.

As mandated by the 2016 NYS budget, NYSERDA is required to implement a rebate program for electric and plug-in hybrid/electric vehicles. NYSERDA is working diligently to meet that deadline and hopes to make an announcement regarding a program soon.

Rebates will be offered at the time of sale for new vehicles and cannot be applied to vehicle purchases made before the launch of the program.

There is no further information available at this time, but please continue to check the NYSERDA website for any updates.

Cool. Thanks for the info.. We should start a pool as to the start date. Put me down for 4:25pm on Friday March 31, 2017.
The dealer I go to was going to contact the dealer association to see if they have any info. No news as of yet.
I think that is shorthand for "F U very much." Do you think they were more polite when they were trying to sell Chevy Citations?
Lets not loose sight of that the start date is prior to 4/1/17 and April 1st is what they imply the program effective date will be. Time will tell if NYSERDA will have the program up and running any time soon. The lack of information the dealers have at this point is not encouraging.
