I did a performance simulation for the GM EV-1. It was informative to make comparisons with the Volt and Tesla. I was surprised at how well the EV-1 (NMH battery) performance compared to the Volt. With a EV-1 and Volt Weight-to-hp of 21 vs. 15 lbs/hp, respectively, the EV-1 wasn't all that fast (see curves below), but it has a simulated 55 mph single charge cruise range (SOC=50%) of 93 miles. I suspect the range estimates GM gave where considerably (~2X) greater by using a SOC exhausted down to 20%. With a range extender ICE the EV-1 looks like a winner. Presumably, at the time of its introduction, its manufacturing cost, battery life, and market size were problems.
