With winter coming, I expect new and old Volt owners to be experiencing the dreaded Engine Running Due To Temperature (ERDTT). I you are interested in disabling this on your Volt, one of our members has an air temperature replacement module that you may be interested in. See http://gm-volt.com/forum/showthread...er-Automatic-ERDTT-disabling-module-available...

With the module installed, you won;t get annoyed when you back out of your garage with a full charge only to have your gas engine turn on because the outside air temp is cold enough to trigger the set point for ERDTT. Never mind that you are warm and cozy in your preconditioned cabin and have plenty of heat fed by the battery. The gas engine is going to run for about 10 minutes anyway. And it will likely run again just as you pull into a parking spot. And again when you come out of the store, and again as you approach your house. All the while ignoring that you have plenty of battery to heat the cabin.

If needlessly burning gas bothers you, there is a solution. Trick the air temp sensor into thinking it's warmer outside than it really is. This involves wrapping a resistor around the two terminals of the temperature module. We have details in our FAQ (http://gm-volt.com/forum/showthread.php?127761-ERDTT-Modification-Options), or you can buy it premade by one of our members, Joesonvolt http://gm-volt.com/forum/showthread...er-Automatic-ERDTT-disabling-module-available....

Why is it 'dreaded ERDTT'?

Personally, I like the engineering brilliance of using the heat engine. Since we got one handy.

Of course, my use case is well within this design. I drive >40mi each commute day. In winter, the engine fires no matter what since I exceed the battery range. ('Winter' being about 3 weeks in Jan and Feb.) :)

http://www.currentresults.com/Weather/Texas/Places/dallas-temperatures-by-month-average.php

"How Often Dallas Has Cold Temperatures

Freezing temperatures overnight can happen in Dallas anytime from November to March, normally totalling 23 days a year. For three nights a winter, the lows drop down to 20 degrees Fahrenheit.

Most frosty nights in Dallas are followed by daytime thaws. Only on two days a year, typically, does the day's high stay below freezing. "

There is a permanent solution to all that issue: Move south!

I lived in NYC and moved to Puerto Rico in 1962, but I never will miss those winter storms, cold (10 degree) school walks, and heavy snow at all. We don't have "Fall" or "Winter" here, because the temperatures at my home never drop below 67 degress in 40 years of measurements (using a Radio Shack digital indoors/outdoors thermometer). And if I had a Volt, my average will be over 50 miles of range all year.

You can see for yourself by opening this AccuWeather link any day:
http://www.accuweather.com/en/pr/bayamon/00961/weather-forecast/272113

I don't seee how " wrapping a resistor around" your body will help you burn less, and into thinking it's warmer outside than it really is!

Yes, the "my battery must be broken, I'm only getting 35 miles in winter now" posts. :)

"Dreaded" is how some (not all) feel. If the shoe doesn't fit, don't wear it.

I am getting between 20 and 26 miles already in my Gen 1 and have had a couple of mornings of ERDTT already. 20 is my new low as I have never hit that before. I am still wondering if the update for the engine idle 2 hour shut off has affected my range. I had that update done on my 2013 during the HPM2 issue dates noted in other threads but HPM2 is not specifically listed on my work order. My range estimate has been a bit lower all the time since then. Aside from a few miles of range drop when parked, I am not experiencing any othe symptoms of the incorrect HPM2 module update.

What I dread is the ERDTT debate season. Could there possibly be anything left unsaid on the subject?

I can't say, but I refused that recall.

Yes - not enough explaining how to force ERDTT to function when it is cold and you need it, but not less than 2C,
Hold mode (except for the early, non export cars lacking Hold)

no this doesnt work right.

not sure why people keep saying this. i can set hold and the car is cold and all steamed up for the first half hour. Hold doesn't work as a means of heating in slow traffic.

Once it does start to kick in to supply heat, you then have to manually turn it on and off, whilst simultaneously watching the heating display to look out for when the electric heating takes over.

It's nonsense to suggest HOLD does what ERDTT does.

The first three posts already have covered the gist of every one of the threads.

1. Sane, logical explanation as to why it would not be useful to some people and the exact situation in which they feel that.
2. It works for me, so suck it up and enjoy it! It's great!
3. Move south! It's always warm here.

2&3 are just condescending to those in 1 who have a legit reason to not need/want the feature, nor have any desire to relocate so their vehicle will work the way they want.

I really want to do #3 but #4 and #5 have to happen first, win the lottery and retire.

There's a new $1000/day-for-life lottery - that would be a pretty sweet retirement!

OK, you've got me there. Except you won't find so many on this continent who think a temperature over 2 degrees is cold.

Not my Volt. No ERDTT for me since I have the hack installed.

So you don't use any heating above 2C!? Phew, you are a hardy soul. Me - my feet turn blue and hands lock up with cold below external temp of 13C if there's no solar radiation onto the car. I guess if you are somewhere cold but sunny then that's different. I'm cold and either night time or grey skies.

What I want is a switch inside the cabin, preferably mounted close to the steering wheel, that turns ERDTT off/on as needed. I just want to turn it off for trips under 35 miles.

I'm at fyodor's latitude, about, and it's 14C today. I'm wearing short trousers and sleeves. It's really very lovely today. Overcast but dry, and leaves are at their color peak this week.

It's possible here too, but the experience of 'temperature' in a car is highly dependent on solar loading, humidity and other psychological factors. When you step into an unheated car on a wet morning and the sun hasn't appeared from behind the rain clouds, with a strong wind blowing at 13C, there's no room in my life then for shorts! ;)

Today was the 2nd day of ERDTT, I find it to be amazing engineering. It completely removed the tension between heating and range.

It really has me thinking about never purchasing a BEV as I feel the range would take too much of a hit in winter. I'll wait to see what bolt owners in cold climates report. Not worried about snow, because I won't be driving in that, it's just these temps below 20 F.
