At least we have our left hand free to slow down the hatch when the struts fail.

Not to downplay your frustration in a right-handed world but if you take two steps to your right before using your left hand, it works fine. I tried this after reading your post. Worked for me.

Oddly enough this has come up before, without much support. It's such a simple fix I can't understand why it is not done as a matter of course.

Because there is a simple two-step answer to the problem as BlueStar has tested... with a two-step return as ItsNotAboutTheMoney points out. It's a twist, twist on the Hokey Pokey dance. lol

Yes, without as much shaking of your tush, unless you really swing that way.

Seriously, how much expense and engineering would it take for a second indentation in the hatch?

In today's culture of 'isms' I'm surprised 'dexterism' is not more of an issue. It is a basic characteristic of at least one in ten people.

Heck, I'm right handed and would love to have both handles. When I pull stuff out, I normally pack everything into my right arm - and then have my left free to close hatch/trunk.

Some fuss over a left handle assist! I don't even use the right hand assist.
What about getting rid of right hand drive on the Gen2 Volt. Lefties don't appreciate that they have a left hand drive monopoly. Somewhere there's a Brit or Ozzie feeling slighted.

Why are you using that handle to open the hatch?
I only ever use it to close. I press the hatch button (centre) and lift right there when opening. Try that.

And upon closing, I use whatever hand is free, doesn't matter right or left. I honestly can't see how this is a burning issue, especially if you follow BlueStar's recommendation should you absolutely need to use your left hand only.

I haven't seen the inside of the hatch, but I'd bet there is stuff there. They couldn't but a handle on both sides, or they would have. It's such an easy add.

As a right handed user, I wondered why they didn't add a handle on the left. I often take stuff out while standing to the left side and can't reach the handle. My vw's had handles on both sides. A bit short sighted on gm's part.
